This place is the last place on earth I would like to go! Everything is bad, service is next to zero if you are Asian. It seem that they are trying to do Aussie''s business! They think they are the customers instead of you!
9.5 of 10 Yum Cha food are deep fried! and there are hardly any steam food. Obviously deep fried food is much much quicker and easier and does not require skill! The food are not cheap at all! Never recommend anybody there!
Don't go out of your way here, this place is average and falls short on value. Food was below par, service was slack this resulted in a forgettable experience.
We have been going to Plume as a family for many years and have also recommended it to many friends and acquaintances and suggested it as a venue for business functions.
The food has mostly been very good and the service impeccable, however, last Sunday night all that changed. It was one of the worst dining experiences I have had. The food was mediocre, the pork spare ribs were tough and barely warm, the san choi bow likewise was cold. This could have been put down to an off night in the kitchen, however, nothing could excuse the service which was appalling. The waiters were abrupt to the point of rudeness and were impatient and very unhelpful.
We will never return and will suggest to friends and business acquaintances that they do likewise.
Reading the previous reviews about this restaurant, I think it all comes down to Pricing.
With Yum Cha, on some days I thought it was the best Yum Cha restaurant at lunch. 9/10. On some occasions, however, it is really bad, around 5/10. Taipan and Golden Dragon beats here on occasions, but having said that, Plume can be really good at lunch on the odd occasion. Personally though I hate inconsistency.
At night time, inconsistency also sets in. As an Asian eater, I find Plume to be overly salty and seasons in its tastes. Although I understand that is a result of Australians expecting slightly differently, fair enough. The dinners here can sometimes be really amazing, and service can be really patchy to really good depending on the day.
The Peking Duck here is really good, the sauce is unbelievable good. Having said that, I don't agree with their use of 'picklet's in the duck crepes. If I went there for Peking duck again, I will surely ask them to omit it and put it on the side. The duck meat is really tasty, the skin is crispier. The sauce is the best in Melbourne. It doesn't need the pickles.
Some of the other dishes are hit and miss. Some are perfect. Some are barely acceptable. I give the food a rating of 8/10, because, I have tried almost every dish in this restaurant. Some of them are really good, better than even Flower Drum. Some of them are appalling, its a disgrace. In reality its probably around -7 out of ten, but I'm tolerant and hope they can improve.
As for the pricing, it is ridiculously expensive. I hardly go there anymore because of that fact.
The food is here is incredibly overpriced for the quality. This is the only Chinese restaurant outside country towns where I've encountered what appears to be spam in the fried rice. The food is well below average and the prices well above average. It is conveniently located in Doncaster Road, Doncaster. An easy 20 minutes drive from the city.
On arriving at the restaurant having booked a table, I was kept waiting for 10 minutes for my table to become available. The wait staff were rude during the whole dining experience and I really felt that because I was Australian and not Asian that they did not want my custom, they only seemed interested in servicing huge tables of Asian clients eating Peking ducks and banquets.
Our meals were served cold and sent back to kitchen twice to be re-warmed, asked waiter three times for a bottle of water and eventually gave up and went to the bar myself to retrieve. Prices were slightly higher than most other Cant/Chinese Restaurant I've dined at and the "corkage charge of $5.00 per person" was an extreme rip-off. Never again.
A ghastly restaurant, I think the only thing keeping this place afloat is the fact that it's located off in the suburbs, miles from anywhere, it simply would not compete closer into the city where far superior, better value Cantonese restaurants abound. The service is atrocious, the decor as dull and lifeless as the uninteresting food. If you want great yum cha, head into the city. There's no comparison!
One of the best yum chars I have had, it's not cheap but the food was very fresh and light, and properly prepared, not like the oily stuff you find elsewhere. Great select, good desserts, make sure you book this place gets maxxed out on sundays.
