Along the Dandenong Tourist Road is Pig & Whistle, a tavern and restaurant that presents the best of English pubs combined with Australian hospitality. For the curious the "pig" refers to a keg and the "whistle" part owes to what brewery workers of old do, whistle while they work to avoid being suspected of sampling the brew! The name and the warm, familial ambience at the Pig & Whistle makes it an easy favourite of locals, regulars and newcomers alike.
The Pig & Whistle's menu caters to those wanting a quick snack to hearty meals. Savour platters of ham, chips and dips, pizzas, salads, steaks, pies and puddings. Enjoy them with red or white wine, draught or bottled beers and ciders. A special children's menu is also available.
You can hang out at the inviting tavern—with its open fire, lounges and comfy armchairs. Or park at the restaurant proper to enjoy Pig & Tavern's signature game pie. If you like it outdoors, you can dine alfresco. Your kids will surely love the playground and play gym outside as well. Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or just dining out with a friend, the Pig & Whistle Tavern is a great place to enjoy a good meal and good company.

Didn't like the food here one bit, very overcooked. Staff and kitchen staff were rude. Would not recommend.

Awesome eye fillet steak, best one I've ever had. We go there often and it never disappoints. Great desserts! only downside is the smell of the bathrooms.

Lovely place to stop for lunch on drive thru dandenongs. Open fires, English pub appeal. Can get quite noisy of a nightime and a bit packed in. But the food is fantastic. Meals are filling and very tasty. It's a brave person that has dessert as well, but they're are just so damn tempting most people just have to try. Friendly service.

I had my 60th birthday party here in Janary 2010 with 40 guests. Just perfect.
We also come here regularly just for dinner. We go to other restaurants as well but every time we go somewhere else we wish we'd gone to the Pig instead.

Had the farmhouse pie which is basically pie meat served in a bowl with cheesy potato mash on top. Wasn't to my personal taste though there was nothing wrong with the meal. Partner had the risotto, which was very nice. Service was prompt and friendly. Decor is rustic. Can get noisy inside, particularly if there are big tables booked with kids. Portions were generous (I would recommend sharing a dessert between two people rather than having one each) and the prices very reasonable.
Great place to bring the family. May not be ideal if you want a romantic dinner for two and are sensitive to kids running around. Would go again.

Great pub fare, one of the best chicken parma's in Melbourne (if a little on the small side at times), great venue, great service. Other thing's I've had hear include the superb game pie, and the pork belly!
Please note that the review from feb 08 says that Newky Brown is on tap, but it ain't, only real english beer on tap here now is Speckled Hen (nice beer though!).
They also have a large sand pit and play equipment for the kids too which is good in summer, as you can sit outside and have a few extra pints.
Only points I'm taking off is for the price, its more restaurant pricing than pub pricing, but I guess the food is of that standard, and its still one of the best places in the Ranges!

Great meals and good value for money. Had dinner at Pig & Whistle many times and have not been disappointed with food or service yet.

When my boyfriend came to Melbourne, he'd never had a parma before. He soon went parma crazy, and parmaed everywhere he could. The top-voted parma on superparma, at a pub in nth Melbourne, turned out to be a big disappointment, heavy on the frying, with thin flavour.
According to my love, this is the place and the parma, hot, moist chicken, rich sauce, crisp sides. I wouldn't know, every time I come here I intend to expand my menu experience but can never pass up the game pie. Even the steamed veggies on the side are delicious somehow, maybe they're grown in butter or something. There's a beautiful dessert selection that we never have room for, but it sounds delicious. Careful, this can be the kind of place you'd move for.

Best place to visit for a meal in winter. Highly recommend the freshly baked cob and then either the game pie or the lamb shanks. Generous portions and great service.

I've been here a number of times and the food and atmosphere will keep me coming back. Mid week it's nice and quiet for lunch, on the weekend it's extremely busy.
The only issue we had was that on our last visit (a Sunday lunch) the waitress forgot to advise the kitchen to start our mains after finishing entrees, so we waited over an hour for our mains to be served. In saying that though the staff are generally friendly and helpful.
I would definitely recommend the steak and guiness pie if it's on the special's board!
