We ate at orita's 1 week ago & thought maybe this place would rival Nobu or Koko's. It was far from it. I would be comfortable in saying it was the worst Japanese food ever. Our entree was ok , but the mains were covered in their "original" teriyaki sauce that it was soooo sweet. I would not recommend this to anyone, unless you want to waste your money.

Something must have happened between June '07 and January '10. I'm reading these smash reviews, but our experience of the restaurant has it floundering as the worst Japanese meal we've ever had! We ordered a la carte, and all the dishes save for the platter we started with and the soup we ended on were dressed in exactly the same way, zero points for creativity.
The platter had a few good salmon sashimi cuts, and the beef cubes were tender and tasty. Everything else was mediocre or bad. All the other things we ate from the a la carte menu except for the tempura was terrible: overdressed to kill the tastebuds. The sauces used with the dishes may have been Japanese, but their overuse was akin to slugging sauces and condiments over bad food at fastfood dens.
We finished with a soup dish that was dismally cooked, the feature mountain vegetable not prepared correctly so that its bitterness had to be masked by an overloading of sugar. They didn't get the basics right with this disappointing dish. And then we were hit with the bill. The dastardly damage came to $400 for six, no drinks. The place was booked out with well heeled sorts, so it must be doing right by a certain kind of palate. Unfortunately, not one attuned to the finesse of Japanese cuisine, fusion or otherwise.

I went to Orita's last night expecting a night of unique experience with Japanese cuisine. However, I was rather disappointed at the end. We (my partner and I) decided on the Chef's Special Degustation menu, since this meant that it served all the chef's specialties.
Overall, the food was good but nothing much we could go all 'oohhh yummy' about. But I have to admit the quality of the ingredients used were good and up to standard. I have heard so much about Orita's that I'm not willing to give up on it just with one visit. Maybe I'll order the usual Ala Carte menu and try the other dishes. Maybe it was just my preference in the taste of the food in the degustation meal?!?

Located behind Toorak Rd in Central South Yarra, this restaurant is a hidden treasure. IMMENSE effort has gone into preparing the food here. Whoever thought of melting corn over a 36hrs+ slow-cook? Or of chilling preserved (herb-injected) tomatoes over 3-days?? From the sashimi to the wagyu beef, everything would simply send your tastebuds to paradise.
If you're a regular, I wish I had your kind of pay, but if you're doing a once-off special celebratory event like me, enjoy the multi-course degustation to try a little of everything, you'll want to come again. Now, who wants to shout me next time?

The BEST Japanese restaurant ever. A little pricey, but well worth it. The sashimi melts in your mouth.
