Tucked away in Melbourne's Chinatown is New Kum Den, the version 2.0 of the popular utilitarian Chinese restaurant serving affordable Cantonese and traditional Chinese cuisine. The New Kum Den still delivers the same and more—in a cosier and more customer-friendly milieu. The décor is basic, as the star is really the food.
New Kum Den has an extensive menu—with chicken, beef, pork, duck, seafood and veggies prepared in dumplings, clay pots, rice, soups, noodles, tofu dishes and yum cha. Appetizers and mains arrive in generous portions, making New Kum Den the place to bring hungry families and friends. Their yum cha in particular, is served on trolleys on Saturdays, Sundays and even public holidays. These steamed delights come in dumplings, pork buns, and many more and they're quite addicting.
Larger tables are set for the avid yum cha crowd as the New Kum Den fills up fast. Patrons just keep coming back for more comfort Cantonese cuisine that's generously served and easy on the pocket.

10 people for Yum Cha on a Sunday morning recently, the second time we have done this in the last 12 months. Service was great, food good and service was most attentive for this kind of place (sometimes at Yum Cha, it is difficult to get the things you want). Highly recommended.

This is now my 1st choice Yum Cha restaurant in town. Food was great and kept coming without too much waiting. Actual room is not so big which is a good thing but make sure you book. Enjoy!

Queues out the door, so book! They say you can judge a Chinese resaurant by the number of "Chinese" eating there - so NKD is good on that score. And didn't fail in the good quality Yum Cha. Trying to organise a time to go for a main meal there, the menu look good.

Had the Lamb Hotpot and some vegies with fermented bean curd, both had good flavour and were of good quality, though may not be to western tastes because of the fermented bean curd (but it's good - I love it!). Service was swift and efficient though a bit functional (it wasn't busy). Restaurant itself was clean and comfortable, a step up from the usual rickety chairs and tables. Costs a bit more than your average chinatown place but you do get more than your money's worth for the little extra you pay. Recommended.

Amazing service at this restaurant, doesn't matter how busy they are, your food is always sent out within a few minutes. Food is very impressive, possibly one of the most authentic Cantonese restaurants in the city. Yum cha has a nice home made quality about it.

My partner and I had yum cha here one Sunday while on holidays in Melbourne last year. It is the best yum cha I have ever had. Selection is great and always fresh. Good value and left very satisfied. The staff are friendly and efficient. Very clean and tidy restaurant. We will be heading back here this year on our next Melbourne trip.

This place is an excellent Chinese restaurant to check out! The food is top quality and at a decent price. While it's busy here and can get a little noisy, the speed of service is amazing and your food is out in a flash! Will be back for sure.

At lunch you'll find business types enjoying the lunch menu, which is damn good value. The dinner menu gets rather lavish with crocodile amongst some of the choices on offer. They get the basics consistently spot on, which is critical. They also accommodate large groups without skimping on service.
When it's packed, New Kum Den is the real deal. It isn't a toff white-tablecloth kind of restaurant that you'll find in other parts of Chinatown. It's honest. The food is great, the people struggle with English but they're super-friendly, the decor isn't tacky, the wine list is accommodating.
If you've been disappointing with other places around Chinatown, it's because you haven't taken your friends here.

We had a dinner party for 16 here for my daughters birthday on a Saturday night. I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough. The waiters were friendly and smiling, the food delicious, prices very reasonable. A couple of our group had issues with some food on the banquet menu they could not eat and the waiters were happy to change it. Our only concern (and not really a big one) was that is was noisy with everyone talking but who cares? Everything else was spot on, congratulations to all at the New Kum Den.

I've had lunch here once a week with IT industry friends for half of the last 3 years. The food is very tasty indeed, at a low price, with a wide variety of dishes. The customers are mostly Chinese, which proves to me that the Cantonese food is genuine.
This place is great for both business, social lunches and dinners. It's relaxed and atmospheric, but very clean and tidy. The lighting adds significant interest to the food. I liked the place so much, I created a dedicated web site for them.
