Well established Glenferrie Rd establishment. Food is reliable, and we can recommend the tandoori platter. On our recent visit, on a busy Saturday night, the service was fine and they handled our dietary request satisfactorily. Although not the cheapest Indian food in Melbourne, the value is ok.
Revisited January 2012: We again had a pleasant evening, and our choices from the extensive menu were all fine. Service was helpful, although it seemed a bit haphazard.

I came back to this restaurant after 2 years. Food has become worse. What was served is not Indian food. Some of them have Indian names but they are chefs own ideas. Otherwise ambience remains good. Not value for money.

Being an Indian, this was the worst experience ever at an Indian restaurant that too on Glenferrie Road, Malvern. I often visit Indian restaurants as I love food and this was one of those terrible experiences.
The food was bad, the staff was unprofessional. The food wasn't cooked and served properly. All they did was add some yellow/orange curry colours and assumed it was cooked and ready to be served. Such places bring shame to Indian food and cooking. My advise 'Do Not Go There' - Ever!

This was my worst Indian dining experience yet. We ordered Chicken Tika and Onion Bhaji for the entree. The chicken was dark brown in colour and tasted as though it had been reheated in the microwave after spending days in the fridge. The onion bhaji was incredibly oily with no real flavour.
For mains we has a mixed vege curry and alloo mutter paneer. Both dishes were inedible. The curry gravy tasted like it was from a premade supermarket pack.
Staff were not friendly and it took a long time for the food to come out. Overall- epic fail.

We went there for dinner and customer service is disappointing. Our waitress was rude. The tables did not have cutlery, plates, and napkins so we had to help ourselves from another table. The Tandoori Platter was awful with chicken neck, and chicken wings as a part of the platter. The chicken was dry and stale, the lamb chop was raw (obviously frozen). I am pretty sure it was frozen patter heated in a microwave. The lemon was recycled from the previous customer. The fish curry was cold . The Nan bread was like eating leather and rice was also stale. The curries have the same gravy (sauce) taste. This is the worst restaurant I ever dined out in my life. I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone.

I went there for dinner and customer service is disappointing. Our waiter was so rude and top that our every vegetarian food dishes has same gravy (sauce) taste. On other side they behave such as they are like so sick of it by serving every day to the customer. Do not know real meaning of hospitality.

I have been a frequent visitor of the Moti Mahal for many years. The food is good and the service good one night a bit average the next. The goat curry is definitely worth trying and the veal shanks in a korma sauce is melt in your mouth and great if you want something milder. Overall great food and good atmosphere and well worth a try if you like Indian.

Food was very average, all dishes based on same flavour, pathetic service. I went there for my birthday party last Monday after checking with them that they would accept my Entertainment card coupon. They agreed, and upon presentation of the bill, they made funny excuses of not accepting it for a value of $25. My bill came to $196, they added another $15 and when asked they said,” You got cake also so we charged, the coupon was only for platter (it was not)." Corkage charges were separate, and finally after increasing the bill to $208, they reduced it by $10 to honour my coupon.
The order taker actually forced us to order more than 8 dishes, by repeating thrice-"This won't be enough, you should order some more etc" which we found very strange. I am very disappointed, will never go back.

I have just had a very unpleasant experience at Moti Mahal restaurant. We called in for lunch, wanting to use our 'entertainment book' voucher, ordered 2 lamb biriyanis, and they subsequently refused to accept the voucher. The person in question was quite rude, shaking his head and wagging his finger at us. He insisted that our meal was only a side dish and not a main meal, so we paid and left, never to return!

Fantastic Indian restaurant with some unusual, innovative dishes. We (3) walked in on a Saturday night without booking, and were seated right away. An hour later, the restaurant was completely full, so it's a good idea to book. The food was delicious. Every dish we ordered was superb. Try the goat curry, and quite unusual mushroom naan bread.
The waiter/senior staff took our order without writing it down, boasting his memory capabilities, only to bring out a wrong curry! It was replaced ASAP. Price was ok, there are cheaper Indian restaurants, but I suppose this is Glenferrie Rd, Malvern.
Will be back soon.
