Overview of Moroccan Soup Bar

The Age Cheap Eats (an annual barometer of the Melbourne grass-roots level food scene) hailed the Moroccan Soup Bar as 2005 champ. This colourful and friendly restaurant offers an inexpensive and exciting vegetarian take on the traditional cuisine of Morocco.

Moroccan Soup Bar gives diners an understanding of another culture through food that speaks not just to herbivores but even to adventurous carnivores as well. It is famed for nourishing and low-priced three-course banquets: varied and flavourful including pickled beetroot and hummus, rich roasted eggplant and the much-praised baked chickpea dish with yoghurt, pide, tahini and slivered almonds.

Service is unusual and personal, the menu is verbal! Customers discuss ingredients, favourites and allergies, creating a new dynamic between the staff and patrons. At the Moroccan Soup Bar, bookings are tight and tables are full. You can regularly see the curious and returning customers lining up on St Georges Road, waiting for a table at this small but well-liked vegan restaurant.

Fantastic food. It is a little daunting, not having a menu but the gamble paid off. Food is exceptional and satisfies craving you didn't even know you had.

This little gem is a must-do if you can get in! Go early to get your name down, there are no reservations. (The bar next door is perfect for a wine while you wait).
There is also no menu, you get a set menu of wonderful, fresh vegetarian food. Go hungry! The servings are so generous, its impossible to finish them all and for such a small cost.

I had great expectations for this place, and thankfully it delivered! There was only one vegetarian in our party but everyone enjoyed the meal, and raved especially over the chickpea bake. There were about 4 of us at the table trying to reverse-engineer that dish!

For me, the highlights of the banquet were the dips at the start, the chickpea bake, and the great eggplant and salad dish. The table was a bit small for our party, but space seemed to be at a premium inside. Some of the chairs were wobbly, but it wasn't too loud even though the restaurant was full.

The ambience isn't really anything special though, and if dining with less than 6 (no reservations available for smaller parties) I'd do what a whole bunch of locals seem to do, which is bring in their own plastic containers and get takeout. The service was no-frills but friendly. We got our food quickly, and they were efficient without making us feel rushed. I will definitely return, tupperware in hand!

Wow, I can't get over the extraordinary comments below. This place is great. As a vegetarian, I get so sick of turning up to overpriced restaurants with one option on the menu which is badly prepared. This place has a great selection of vegetarian dishes and the banquet is fantastic. If you're a mad meat-eater, you won't like it, and won't appreciate the cold dishes (see unhelpful comments below).

Great fun, especially because you get so much food you can barely walk afterwards. And if you can't handle being without alcohol for an hour (the service is fast and efficient) then you've got other issues going on. Enjoy!

What an awesome place! The food was very tasty and original. We arrived very early, so luckily we didn't have to wait. It was our first time there and it's only a verbal menu, so we had no idea what to order and the lady was not very helpful. Nevertheless, we both had main meals and loved it! Highly recommended.

This place disappoints. A long wait, what for? Rude, indifferent staff and meals that are cold and tasteless. There's no presentation, love, or even care for what's put on the plate. The only care the proprietress has is for her back pocket. She buys poor quality, bland vegetables and slops them up without any respect for the produce or her customers. No thanks mate! The worst part about the experience was watching all the buffoons in the joint enjoying every slop on there plate. Don't fall for the hype.

This was one of the worst meals I have ever had and I have been to 3rd world countries. For a start there was no soup. Every thing had lentils in it including the tea. The rice wasn't cooked properly and the dishes were bland vegetables. The service was inattentive and at times just plain rude. And there was a no alcohol policy. The only thing positive I can say is that it was relatively cheap. Why bother with a place like this when Melbourne is one of the great food cities in the world. Suffice to say I have never gone back.

We ate here for the 3rd or 4th time on 26th August 2009 for dinner. I must say that I don't think I will return as often anymore, the price has gone up to $20 per head, which represents value for money only if you are satisfied with eating loads of rice, potato and couscous with a bit of veg on the side!

This is quite a big price hike considering that last time we ate here (only 2-3 months ago the price was $16 per head). Service was pretty bad, waitress was not particularly friendly although they do take into account dietary requirements. I could think of plenty of better cheap eats in the area where 4 people could eat for under $80.

I feel bad to give a not so hot rating, but, although the food is great, the atmosphere is too full on. There really is no ambience to speak about. Some copper pots on the wall for decor doesn't compensate for a cosy evening. The food while being tasty was cold and on a cold winter's night, I wasn't impressed. They also need to provide diners with paper napkins as soon as the first dish arrives, we had to ask for ours.

Presentation was a problem, and the fact that we had to serve out rice and lentils from a flat plate with a regular table spoon added to my frustration. It is value for money at $20 if you are prepared to slum it, no offence, I think people are getting carried away with the whole eclectic, earthy thing and find it either hard to differentiate between the real thing or are too polite to disagree with the general consensus. Thank goodness for the Deco bar round the corner with real drinks!

Funky, noisy great food and all vegetarian! If you get the banquet you won't be leaving hungry. Great service, definitely has an edge compared to your everyday dining experience. I will go back for sure, but be early, the place was packed out at 6.05 pm after opening at 6 pm!
