“a quality option in Hardware Lane…the food is good, the value high, making The Mill the best choice in Hardware Lane” – MX Magazine
The ambience was actually good but for someone who wears glasses, it seemed pretty dark so ambience is a 5 for me. Service was good, very knowledgeable waitress but I'm not sure about the value. The food is good but sounds weird at the same time, caramel that's salted?! I had a special and it was salmon, it was nice. Yum yum.
I recently discovered this bar and restaurant on a visit from Christchurch to Melbourne. Wow, the food was absolutely great and not the same old tired menu I am usually confronted with.
I had a delicious salmon dish and my partner had prawns ...what was so great was there was a fair serving and it was beautifully presented. I'm a journalist and for years wrote restaurant reviews in WA so I'm fussy but this restaurant and its staff impressed - great food, music not too loud and excellent service.
The waitress was so well informed she even knew what desserts did and did not have honey in them. I'm allergic to honey and it's great to have a waitress who knows the ingredients of the dish. I will definitely visit this restaurant again when over in Melbourne.
Gosh there are some grumpy people out there leaving bad reviews of good places! I dine at the Mill regularly and highly recommend it. I bring clients here for business lunches (the wine list is by far the best in Hardware Lane), and come here with my girlfriends for girlie catchups. The salmon dish is my fave, nice and healthy, followed by the maybe not so healthy cheese plate with stacks of fruit bread! Charlie's is great for cocktails after dinner and the boys behind the bar are pretty hot too!
Less passionate response to this place than other diners, everything good but nothing amazing or disastrous! The food was solid for $25-$35 mains, though the salmon was overdone and the sirloin quality was not up to scratch for the price. We arrived starving, and had to do some waving to get service quickly. Once that was taken care of, everything went smoothly. Loud on a Saturday night, not good for dates.
The wine list is good but some of the mark ups make you weep, the dessert wines pushed our limits and we headed out for sweet things elsewhere.
Being a Sydney sider, I have always high expectations when visiting Melbourne eateries. The Mill definitely has not lived up to what some of the revieweres here are raving on about. Yes - the ambience is great and yes the wine list and cocktails are really good. But the food... what can I say?
My friend had penne with pumpkin which was completely overcooked. I had pork belly (and I know this is quite a fatty dish) but I wasn't served any meat, only fat! The crust was so oily it stuck to the top of my mouth. Needless to say I didn't eat much of it. Even though the menu stated that there was a side involved, I only got served the meat with a dab of creamed something.
I would say it's a nice place to go to for drinks, but stay away from the food.
I went to the Mill for an after work drink that turned into dinner. We went on a Thursday and had $9 cocktails all night that were awesome. We ate dinner outside as the jazz band played up and down the lane - it was really special and it felt that we could have been at a restaurant in Europe. After dinner we went to Charlies Bar downstairs - the bar downstairs is very cool. All in all our experience was awesome - we will be back!!
I'm surprised at 2 of the reviews I've read about The Mill. I have been on many ocassions and always had an excellent evening. Based on one visit, how can one say "management naturally did not acknowledge...", I can certainly say managment at this place a far more switched on than most restaurants I have eaten at. As for the party of 20, well having run a restaurant myself, it only takes 5 of those 20 arriving late to completely throw any kitchen.
I urge you to ignore these 2 reviews and look past a couple of bitter people needing to bitch and moan. This place is truly above anyone's expectations of Hardware Lane both service and especially food. The quality of food is worthy of the best 6 star restaurants.
The Jazz band on Friday nights is really fun and when you're done eating, the cocktail bar downstairs is really cool. Reminds be of a 1920's smokey jazz bar (without the smoke). Every cocktail is made to the finest detailsl as these guys have been in the industry for many years and seriously know how to make a drink. No drink leaves the bar without the perfect balance.
Check it out, I guarantee you won't be disappointed.
The food was excellent. Visually the place looks very cool, but it was very noisy. With a group of 10, the service was at times impressive (knowledge of food, personality), but then we would struggle for extended periods to get any drinks or orders taken. The management naturally did not acknowledge my issues with the food when I called later in the evening, which has probably left a bad taste in my mouth. Overall, I would not recommend The Mill for dates or client lunches as the results are unpredictable.
This is definitely the best restaurant on Hardware Lane, we came here as we saw it reviewed in the Age Good Food Guide, we were not disappointed. The food was fantastic, and the staff really friendly, they have a jazz band upstairs on Fridays. We had great cocktails downstairs in Charlie's Bar after dinner. Would highly recommend this place.
We went to The Mill with a party of 20 for a birthday dinner. The restuarant was not too busy as it was a Monday night.
We arrived at 7:30pm and had to wait a long time before we were given water and our drink orders. The menus didn't arrive for another hour and many drinks only showed up after repeated reminders. A beer should not take 35mins to pour.
Our meal orders were taken for 10 of the group and the waiter dissappered for another half an hour before the remaining 10 people could order from the menu. After numerous drink mishaps, the final straw was half of the group being served mains at 10pm and the other half up to 10:30pm.
Two vegan orders arrived with cheese.
Based on the food - The Mill was not amazing, but not bad at all. Based on the service - The Mill is a waste of an evening.
