We arrived late for our booking and the staff were really friendly and easy going about it and even ordering our food they gave us space and enough time. The waitress had a vast knowledge and was great help when choosing drinks and food as this place has qite the variety to choose from. Food was delicious and the portion sizes were done really well. A all round good place to eat then down stairs to charlies bar to keep drinking.

Second time I have eaten here and this place does good standard food in a fun atmosphere. Hardware Lane has a great feel about it and this place is in the middle of all the action. The menu is modern and well priced and the food is generally of a good standard - not fine dining but definaiely a notch above most modern Australian restaurants.
Wine list is Ok, you will find something that suits. If you can catch an outside table for lunch on a sunny day you will really enjoy the experience.

After a terrible experience in st kilda the night before we were in search of somewhere to restore our hope of good food in melbourne, we found it here. We stumbled upon hardware lane which is very like the laneways of italy and the mill was definitely the touch of class it suggests.
The staff are well dressed and good models for the establishment. The blend between the bar amd restaurant is perfect with staff attentive to all needs no matter where you are. It was lovely to sit and people watch in the lane whilst sipping a delightful cocktail and then later on to have a seat inside the classy, cosy and dimly lit bar inside. What began as just a drink quickly changed to dinner. The flavours of the meals were interesting and well thought out.
They obviously care about quality and fresh flavours. The meal sizes aren't massive but it means you can eat more and sample more flavours amd the quality well makes up for it. The wine list is extensive and the staff are attentive and friendly without being overbearing. Next time I am in melbourne it would be the first place I'd go.

My partner and I escaped the Christchurch quakes for a week and wandered down Hardware Lane looking to treat ourselves. Don't you hate those places that tout for business, so tacky. Anyway, we saw the Mill and stepped inside. There were two menus, one with all dishes at $15 but we decided to treat ourselves, my salmon was outstanding, served with cubes of kiwi fruit, strawberry and lemon which gave it a tangy zest - Pam chose the Coq au Vin and deemed it sublime.
In Chch many of the good restaurants are still out of action but I have not been anywhere in my hometown where the food was so tender, beautifully presented and value for money. We even had a Swedish waitress Aleksandra and she was great, didn't hover but was on hand when we needed her. I am a journalist and will be recommending this place to friends travelling to Melbourne. And I didn't even mention the desserts!

Unfortunately, we didn't get to taste the food because the staff gave our table away because we were 20 minutes late on a saturday night. It didn't matter that the booking was made 3 weeks in advance, that we confirmed the booking that afternoon, rang to say that we were running late or that it was a birthday. Luckily il nostro postro on hardware lane put together a table for us with great food and service all night.

Took my wife here mid week. Hardware lane is very atmospheric and even though it was a cool evening we sat ouside. The food was excellent as was the service which was fast and friendly. We went down to Charlie's Bar Afterwards for cocktails which were also excellent. Highly recommended.

Bland indeed. The flavours which sounded so good on the menu were not evident in the actual meal. Several components of meals appeared to have been prepared hours in advance. Enjoyed the cheese-board which only needed to be assembled, not cooked.
Very noisy and crowded if you like that sort of thing, but hard to imagine anyone liking walking past spruikers for other restaurants as you make your way down hardware lane. Fortunately The Mill has no spruikers.
Staff were excellent except for the bouncer who was very rude to a disabled member of our party who fell over. None of us would go there again.

The food here was awful. The bread was like a scone, the dips tasteless, the tortellini had pasta an inch thick, the pork belly overcooked and dry with lumpy mash. It was just awful.

Stumbled across this place recently. The pasta (housemade) was lovely, soft and silky with 5 jumbo sized scallops. The coconut based sauce spiked with lemongrass and the sweetest tasting chillies was lovely. At $25 for a main, I found this to be excellent value. I was dining alone, and the wait staff were attentive and friendly without being overbearing.
I was served quickly and not rushed at all, though I think the ladies sitting near me had to wait for their meals (?? - I overheard them ask the waitress rather grumpily how much longer their food would be), they were there before I arrived and when I left, they still hadn't been served their food (?) - other than that, I enjoyed my meal and look forward to going back on a return trip to Melbourne!
Updated - I revisited The Mill in April on another business trip to Melbourne. I went back to the squid ink linguine which I enjoyed so much on my first visit, and was sorely disappointed. The linguine was thick with parts of the pasta stuck together. The sauce was tasteless, at least the scallops were cooked well. I had ordered the pate with housemade brioche for entree, the brioche was too sweet and crumbly and the pate was cold straight out of the fridge, I actually enjoyed the complimentary bread with oil more! Overall, I don't think I'll be back.

Way too expensive for the small, bland servings. Noodles were undercooked, the barramundi overcooked and my friend's risotto was bland beyond belief, more like plain boiled rice with colouring rather than real risotto. Many smokers congregate in the nook which is right next door to this restaurant, off putting.
Feedback regarding our meals fell on deaf ears via the waitress which was disappointing. You get the feel they rely on unsuspecting tourists to the cbd, rather than a true love of food/wine provision. Their website promises far more than they deliver in real life.
