Overview of Meltemi Greek Tavern

Rosario comes from the southern part of Italy where he studied his cookery profesion. He then moved to the island of Mykonos and owned one of the best seafood restaurants on the island for 7 years. He recently moved to Australia and now owns Meltemi Greek Tavern in Doncaster.

Meltemi Greek Tavern now in Doncaster, is the original Meltemi management and chef, offers a great selection in traditional and mediterranean cuisine. Lamb on the spit, fresh seafood cooked on real charcoal is what gives Meltemi the aroma of its traditional flavours.

    2nd visit (1st 4 years ago) Not very impressed unfortunately. Booked for Mothers Day, was not told when booking that it was a set menu. Arrived and was told it was 'a set' after saying that I wasn't informed when booking and not particularly happy, was told that the senior staff would come and have a chat with me. That didn't occur.

    The set menu was for 2 persons based on $42.00 per person, we paid $45 person plus drinks. Admittedly didn't check the bill till after paying. There was no separate bowl of olive oil (normally served at Greek restaurants for dipping). The dips though tasty were small in portion. The octopus was not tangy with lemon as expected. Which brings me to the point of having a set menu, what if people are allergic to certain foods, or come to a lunch with a budget? If I had been told, I would have gone elsewhere.

    The baklava was burnt on the bottom. The corkage $4.50 per bottle (love that as we opened and poured our own drinks, so $4.50 for the cost of a glass on the table). All in all disappointed with the outcome. The way we show a restaurant we like it is to return, sadly we won't.

    I took a group there on Valentine's Day. The glass of champagne arrived flat (obviously the dregs of a bottle opened hours or days earlier). Between courses, several of the waitstaff stood around with hands on hips long after our plates should have been collected. None of us will go there again.

    I got 3 vouchers from one of those deals websites. Booked for a family birthday dinner. Food was fantastic! And they even catered to our family members dietary requirements!

    Quality = excellent
    Quantity = enough considering we had a 3 course meal
    Flavors = amazing - eating Greek food regularly, this food was enjoyed by all!
    Service = very friendly and accommodating

    Atmosphere a little loud & crowded, but it's expected from Greek restaurants.
    Some live music would have been nice. All in all an excellent experience and we will definitely be back and refer others. (I wish I got more vouchers).

    We had an absolutely fantastic night! The food was delicious, fresh and tasty. The service was fantastic, our waitress was one of the best we've had in a long time. The restaurant was busy and the atmosphere was great. I look forward to returning again. It was our first time here but it definitely won't be the last! Thank you Meltemi!

    Loved the fish (dory) it was awesome, enjoyed the calamari for entree and the saganaki cheese and dips. Only critisism lamb cutlets were too dry for fellow diners on my table, you guys rock, great meal personally and great service... Fiona.

    We have been travelling around for some time looking for that terrific Greek restaurant. We've experienced Flame in Surrey Hills amongst many. Then, upon moving to East Doncaster we fell upon Meltemi. Cheap, No. But, the service has always been terrific. The food outstanding. Any problems, they've been fixed. Highly recommended.

    My entree was erroneously served to other people at my table who ordered a set menu. When I asked where my entree was as there was a delay, I was told it had been delivered. The senior staff insisted it wasn't her fault that her waitress served my meal to the wrong people (we had re-arranged ourselves at the table to make it easier for the staff, having all those having the set menu at one end of the table and those eating off the menu at the other. I was the last person, opposite those having the set menu) and that those having the set menu should've known exactly what was on the set menu, they shouldn't have eaten my entree!

    She offered to cook me another entree, but I would have to pay for it!. Appalling service. Also, the room was incredibly noisy, screaming babies and children. I was barely able to hear the person next to me, let along anyone else at the table. The incident spoilt my night as I was bitter at having to pay for a meal I did not receive, as well as the appalling argument from the senior staff! I have dined here a number of times over the years but will never dine here again!


    Response from Management:
    Dear SaraMunn,

    I was the person that you spoke to on Saturday night, and the restaurant manager. You were offered a complimentary chargrilled calamari, which is what you originally ordered and another person on your table accidentally ate. You didn't want this in the end, as you said for me not to worry about it, and so the original calamari WAS taken off the bill- it was clearly stated on the bottom of the bill that it had been taken off.

    I did not mean in any sense to imply to you that the problem was yours. This was not stated at any time throughout the converstation- which was purely about the process of staff & I am sorry if you feel you didnt enjoy your night, I did attempt to satisfy your needs but to no avail.

    Regarding the 'screaming' children, we at Meltemi, pride ourselves in promoting that we are a Family Restaurant. We do not discriminate against people with young children and babies. We do offer a Family Night on Monday nights, where children eat for free, but families are MORE than welcome every day as well, including Saturday nights.
