Loved It. Great food and service, very family friendly. We saw the review in the age in January and have been wanting to visit for a while. Finally got there. Very impressed.

The world famous Cuckoo Restaurant is an Australian icon located in the magnificent Dandenong Ranges just a short drive from Melbourne. Beginning in 1914 as the Quamby, a refreshment stop famous for its strawberry and cream teas, it was extended in 1935 to operate as a restaurant and bed and breakfast.
In 1958 the restaurant was purchased by a young German couple who named it the Cuckoo after hearing the call of a Cuckoo in the bush at night. This marked the beginning of an era that has continued on into the 21st century under the constant guidance of Karin Koeppen.
The restaurant is situated in Olinda, one of the pretty villages of the Dandenong Ranges, surrounded by beautiful Mountain Ash forest. The decor is in Bavarian style with the staff wearing colourful traditional costume. Being the first restaurant in Australia to offer a smorgasbord, it has become world renowned and constantly receives visitors from around the globe.
Lunching at the restaurant we enjoyed choices from an amazing smorgasbord. We began with Soup of the Day followed by an entrée selection of seafood and European delicacies. The main buffet included Roast of the Day, various meat dishes, German sausages, traditional dishes, vegetarian selections, cold platters, salad bar and much more. There was a delectable dessert buffet with continental cakes and pastries, fresh fruit and Pancakes with a choice of toppings. A comprehensive wine list is available, filtered coffee and tea are included.
With our fellow diners we enjoyed a unique Bavarian floor show which included cowbells, yodeling and traditional songs. Special events run throughout the year with the Oktoberfest a highlight. The visit was an experience we will never forget. Inquiries are welcome and bookings are advisable.

I was very disappointed with my experience at Stravos. I celebrated my mother's 80th birthday with 10 people. The food was average and not enough for everyone. I had to ask for extra saganaki so everyone could have a decent bite. The prawn dish {cooked in some tomato sauce} was terrible and only 1 prawn/person. The meat at the end was cold, probably from the day before. At the end I was charged extra $5/person for this bad wxperience. The seniors taff was very rude when I complained about it. I will never ever go again!

Terrible food, over priced, I asked what ingredients were in a beer they served and the response was "Ah, beer? I don't get what you mean." And you're in the hospitality industry? Absolutely disgusted with the high cost and bland food. Beautiful location though.

What a letdown. Having been a regular patron of this restaurant some years ago, I decided to take family from overseas for a Yum Cha today, 27 December. The selection of dishes was very limited with about 15 items on offer. Hot dishes were served cold, and the prices for the standard of the food were exhorbitant.
When I complained to staff about the cost and the quality of the food I was told that it is all out of their control. They were right, nothing they did in this place showed any semblance of control. I am about to check with Dragon Boat at Knox to see if they are affiliated, as I have not been there for about 12 months. I hope the Knox restaurant is not affiliated with the Melbourne Dragon Boat, because if it is they have lost myself and my friends as customers.

I was there Christmas Eve with my family, food was beautiful, atmosphere was great, entertainment excellent. My family and I had not been to the Cuckoo for a very long time it was a memorable experience, I hope we can do it all again. Thanks to all the staff who made it special.

Xmas lunch, 2011 will never forget, the worst meal the 4 of us have ever had.
The turkey was round a dry as a old boot (packet frozen), and all we could taste on the so called fresh Snapper was the abundance of pepper corns, that masked the fish taste, as for the entrees supposedly a prawn cocktail! was a lettuce leaf with canned shrimps and a sort of sauce, that made everything limp and tasteless.
Oh and there was the corn jacks they weren’t too bad as they were the only thing that any flavour (wonder what frozen packet they were from) but all in all we will never go back there, a waist off over a $600 lunch. Should have gone to the Clover Cottage at half the price. Cheers. Phil………hope this helps.
