Since being renovated the old historic pub is no longer. Food took a long time to come out and we had to ask for the waiter to take our order for drinks. When the food did arrive it was verging on cool and had an Ok taste. When you order an eye fillet for $36 you expect it to be great. My sister in law ordered the parma which was soggy and had no flavour. Way too expensive for what you pay for!

Provincial is always a good consistent choice for European pub fare. Dishes always have an interesting twist, but doesn't veer too far from the original.
Bouillabaisse was lovely, rich, generous flavours. The boys had the fish selections both were cooked to description.

Food was horrible, not fresh. Parma looked like it was definitely not fresh.
Came out cold, and when it was returned told that they were going to remake it. Same piece came back refried with extra cheese.

Very disappointed in the long wait in line to order, by the time you get to the front you have lost your appetite with frustration. Food was pretty ordinary, I agree with other review that Tavern has gone down hill since the extension, will probably not go back again which is a shame as we have frequented this pub often over the years.

I order salmon they said it was grilled.
The service was fast I had the meal under 10 minutes. There was a manager standing at the counter the whole time.
I took a bite of the salmon and it tasted like smoke. So smokey I couldn't eat it. I had stout that was less smokey.
I returned it. I got a second salmon this one was cooked on the outside and raw on the inside.
When I complained I was told this is how its cooked.
The manager went and hid for a while for such a large man he was a arrogant coward.
The manager didn't give a rat, this is how the fish is cooked. We char grill it.
I will not recommend anyone go to the Baxter tavern.

One of my mates lives just off Sydney Rd so I've been to the Green as the "locals" call it a couple of times. Love the beer garden. They have very strong heaters outside so you can still actually sit in the garden despite the autumn temperatures.
Last time my friend ordered a plate of breads and dips which were delish, didn't know they had food other than the pizzas you can get delivered from a pizza joint close by.

This place sets new limits when it comes down to disappointing service and awful food. On four separate occasions the steak was overcooked, fifth time meals were nearly an hour apart. Beer comes with warm glasses and staff have real attitude god forbid you question why you did not get what you paid for.

We went on a gift voucher, so can only go by that! We thoroughly enjoyed what we ate for all 3 courses! Although they were short staffed, we could not complain of the lack of service, in fact I think because of that, they went that bit furthur to give us the best service. If I was paying cash, I would not like to pay the full price, but we enjoyed it, and the experience!
Should add, that the location was not easy to find, and that they do need to open it up more some how to draw attention!

I am so happy that this old pub at the top end of my street got tarted up. The West is really showing everyone what can be served up over the bridge. I have been here a number of times and it never disappoints. Whether you are dining in the bar or the restaurant you will love this comfy corner pub. The steaks are cooked to perfection the chips are fat and fluffy; fish & chips are buttery and delectable the salad with peas is the nicest one I have ever had... it's worth getting the fish & chips just for this!; my fiance is obsessed with the steak & kidney pie, being a Yorkshireman he has high pie standards! He has now ordered this dish 4 times and maintains it's the best pie he has ever eaten; I love the desserts and stinky cheese board this place is the business. It's not a cheap pub meal but you are paying for top notch service and top quality food you will love this place and return over and over again... don't forget to make a booking this place is busy every night of the week. Keep up the good work - love this local gem.

We frequent this hotel a lot as we live nearby. I have never had a bad meal and the soup/salad is inticing. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff. My only criticism is that, unless you pick your times, you usually have a long wait to order. Other than that great value.

Went to welcome stranger with friends saturday night 21st april 2012, enjoying the night out drinking and playing pokies, regular at welcome stranger for long time, know some staff there and the security guys, they're always nice, after drunk 4 pots of the beer and exciting playing the pokies, went back to the bar with friends to buy more drinks the manager or the guy who was in charged that night said no more drink for you only the lady, I said what are you joking! Embarrassing. What a manager, he didn't know what he was doing, I wasn't that drunk or course any problems, I was just having fun and playing pokies, even though I know the security guy and some staff there, they can't say or do anything because he is the manager, again what a manager that he doesn't know what is drunk and what is fun, terrible attitude! We left went to crown casino and have fun all night. What a manager at Welcome Stranger? Never go back there if he is still manager there.

The location of this place left a little to be desired but once you get past it, wow what an awesome place to have lunch! The menu is French based with a lovely selection of steaks. My steak was cooked exactly the way I liked, medium rare. The steak came on a large plate with chips And a flavoursome salad. We also had entrees before hand. Try the white bait! The staff were very friendly and accommodating and the ambience was perfect.

I knew as soon as I saw my meal it wasn't going to be good. How hard is it to make a good chicken schnitzel? The crumbs weren't even browned off properly. Truly horrible! My partner ordered a medium rare porterhouse which came out over done. For $29 this really wasn't acceptable. Will never eat there again!

For years, we've been having lunch in the Vaucluse lounge prior to Saturday afternoon football. It's always been most enjoyable, of very good quality, and excellent value for money. The style of food is more the traditional pub fare, but it's done in a home cooked kind of way. For example, the recent T-Bone steak was an excellent and ample steak with 4 perfectly cooked vegies. Nothing flashy, basic and good.

I have been going to the Royal Hotel all my life, back in the days when the Bombers played at Windy Hill until last night. But not again. What was once a family pub and a great place to meet for pre dinner drinks, then dine in the restaurant has been turned into a Man Cave.
For women to have to walk thru either one of two 'man' bars is not only intimidating but it has completely changed the ambience of this hotel. What was once a lively restaurant was now only 25% occupied on a Friday night. To turn that cosy bar into a 'man bar' is a very bad decison. Plus, when dining in the restaurant you have to go to the other 'man bar' to get a drink. Just awful! Very disappointing and I won't be back. Definitely Not for females.

Was at the Young and Jackson on Easter Sunday and obviously not in a position whereby we were spoilt for options considering majority of venues were closed. We noticed a sign for Chloe's Restaurant upstairs and thought what the heck.
Honestly wasn't expecting a great dining experience. The Young and Jackson is an old hotel which has been around for years and I have had many drinks there in the past but never really eaten there.
I would suggest the restaurant is somewhere between your traditional pub fare/ bistro set up to a pub with a 5 star dining menu and fit out.
We both opted for a medium rare eye fillet and soon were both turning to each other with significant looks of approval. Cooked to perfection, the beef just melted in the mouth and the gorgonzola butter sauce I had with it was brilliant. In fact we didn't stop talking about those steaks for the rest of our trip. Best steak in a long time.

Service was poor - particularly when deliverying and clearing meals. For a table of 16, overall the meals seemed okay - but too squashed in, had to request additional table. The mayor issue was that one meal, was well under cooked - not noticed until 3/4 eaten and also had a piece of coarse steel wool - about 2cm long mixed in - not a good experience! Based on the staff sevice and the poor experience with the meal - wouldn't be eating there again.

I grew up in this area and have seen the Pine Grove Hotel through some seriously bad times food and service-wise. Having eaten there several times over this recent summer I was really pleasantly surprised. The new deck overlooking the winery is really lovely on a summers night. The menu is quite varied and reasonably priced. I have really enjoyed the seafood linguini in particular. They are a little light on vegetarian dishes, which I hope they'll improve. I'm looking forward to securing the table by the fire when the weather cools down.
