What a great place. It isn't huge but it's extremely well done. There are four areas..Antartica, Reef and River, Coral Atoll and Sharks Alive. We could have watched the Emperor Penguins for hours. My four year old has only ever seen a Little Penguin before and he was completely enchanted. They have glass domes built into some of the display tank bases (see pictures) that small children can easily access.
All the exhibits offer something for young and old. It was not a busy day when we went and I think I would deliberately avoid peak times as very large numbers could impede your viewing. There is a daily timetable of activities/feeding/ talks and they are interesting and engaging, not so dry that you become bored rigid!
I agree that it could be an expensive day out for some families but you have to travel to the Barrier Reef or further afield to see some of these animals which puts the entrance fee into context. I noticed that a child is $19.00 but an annual child's pass is $38.00 which is great value for locals. There are also the usual range of concession tickets and carers are free on presentation of their carers card/companion card when visiting with the person they care for.
