Granted the title of "Best Steak Restaurant" by the Victorian Restaurant and Catering Association in 2006, and being a finalist in 2007 and 2008, Mediterraneo Charcoal Grill and Wine Bar is indeed an exciting eatery amid the Bridport Street cafe-scape. The space doubles as a casual gallery, with abstract artwork adorning the walls adding a splash of modern style to the otherwise modest and delightfully rustic ambience.
Mediterraneo has earned its accolades with some of the best charcoal-grilled food Melbourne has to offer, from pasture-fed aged steaks and fresh seafood to an assortment of Mediterranean vegetable-based recipes. All of these are cooked on a custom-made mallee-root grill, which ingeniously allows most of the fat to drip away, rendering what could be a greasy meat-fest into healthy and tasty dishes, distinctively flavoured with natural wood smoke. After dinner, grab a glass of fine wine and escape from the steamy dining area to the back courtyard marquee, where cobblestones, wicker chairs and up-beat Spanish music evoke the atmosphere of a quaint European village.

So serious business – Steaks! All steaks come with roast potatoes and a red wine jus, there are four to choose from and varying grams to separate the men from the boys!
I go all out and order the “Certified Wagyu Beef – Wagyu is the world famous Japanese Beef breed. The meat is typically highly marbled, full flavoured with relatively low levels of saturated fats and cholesterol compared with other beef breeds. We seek free-ranged cattle with clean air and natural grasses, marble score 6+. Scotch Fillet steak 250g $49.50″.

The restaurant is a little gem! The service was exceptional and our waitress was very knowledgeable. One of our friends is vegan and they were able to put together a meal for her which she loved (skewed vegies, roast potatoes and ratatouille) but was a little pricey. Else, the steaks were great, loved the side salad with crumbed feta, the chargrilled vegies would have been better with some mushrooms and thicker pieces.

I loved this restaurant, it was very personable and casual, but had top class service. It didn't at all feel pretentious like Scusami (a restaurant I went to the week before).
The owner helped serve and even had a chat with us about which wine to choose. Usually in restaurants like this, they would recommend the most expensive wines on the list, but I was quite surprised when the owner chose the most moderately priced shiraz on the list, and even told us that it was what he drank, he has good taste.
Four of us went and shared 2 entrees, the squid and the prawns, the prawns were bland, however, the squid was delicious. For mains I had the venison which was cooked and seasoned perfectly (being of asian background I usually find up market 'westernised' restaurants with to have bland seasoning). My friends had the angus steak which was medium rare to my liking, some restaurants don't understand 'medium rare', and the lamb cutlets were done perfectly as well even though the couscous that accompanied the lamb was mediocre. I'm not a big fan of fish but my friend who had it swears by it.
The baklava with lemon sorbet was to die for, and I recommend trying their vanilla icecream which tastes like real vanilla. I'm taking my parents back again this weekend. Definitely a good restaurant for family, friends, or even a date if you're lucky.

The food at this restaurant was outstanding. I had the 400 gr. porterhouse steak I asked for medium rare. It was the most tender and juicy steak I have ever tasted. My dining partner had a wagyu steak and comment was “delicious”. The wagyu was well done, yet still very tender. The service was good, a very attentive wait staff and great vine list, the price is quite reasonable for the quality of food and service. I would definitely eat here again.

I had dinner here for my birthday. My venison was nice but my friends steaks were all too dry and overcooked.

This was a wonderful place to eat. I found it by reading other glowing reviews on various sites, and to my delight, they were all true. The staff were friendly and professional, the food was excellent, and the atmosphere was warm and unpretentious, sophisticated enough for a 'dinner for two', whilst being family friendly. All this was presented comfortably with an authentically European flavour (cross cultural really), good background music, nice blend of clientele and a great wine list (local and international selection).

I cannot fault this place. Small menu kept fresh. Best fillets in Melbourne, cheap here compared to other places. Prawns served hot garlic butter, delicious side salads. Must try desserts. Delicious. Upstairs, conference, reception for small groups. You must try for anniversary or birthday for those that like luxury. Outside courtyard romantic dining too.

My partner brought me here for our anniversary. It's a nice little place, tucked away in a quiet street. After reading the reviews below, I'm not sure if there has been a change in management because we didn't feel that it's anything spectacular.
We started off with the antipesto. That was alright. For main course, I had the Wagu and he had the T-bone. We both asked for our steaks to medium rare but they came out different. His was nice and juicy while mine was more medium than medium rare. I was rather disappointed, given all the awards they have so proudly displayed on their walls.
It was an enjoyable dinner but I won't be heading back in a hurry.

An absolutely brilliant night out, one of the best meals I've had. We were down from Sydney for the Grand Prix and visited Mediterraneo on a saturday night, quite late. It was busy but we received royal treatment, including a personal visit to our table from the chef, ensuring that everything was to our liking, as well as a farewell from him on the way out. The floorstaff were superb, very attentive and experienced without crowding or rushing us. I can recommend the calamari for entree, the fetta and roasted vegetables salad and the creme brulee, as well as perhaps the best steak I've had, with a delicious mushroom and muscat sauce. This restaurant is not the cheapest you'll find but you won't find better quality steaks and dishes anywhere else. Perfect for a special night out, one you won't soon forget.
