Matteo's has been offering modern Australian cuisine and expert hospitality since 1994. You can easily compare the restaurant to a dapper and slightly peculiar gentleman—plush interiors consisting of chandeliers and purple chairs. Still, its cuisine is not a safe classic European, more like a colourful Asian fusion. Matteo's serves interpretations of Chinese and Japanese classics from entrees to mains.
Given the Victorian inspired interiors and intimate spaces, Matteo's is still fine dining with interesting nods to Asia. They have private rooms and menus to complement an occasion or milestone you want to celebrate. Matteo's also has an extensive wine list highlighting rare Victorian wines.
Matteo's enjoys an enviable position—being patronised by foodies and locals sans advertising. Low-key elegance is key in Matteo's appeal. It is a favourite destination for a special date, family gathering or business lunch meeting.

Wow! One of the best dining experiences we've had. We had the degustation with matching wines. Creative, original food, terrific wines, prompt professional service. For food this good, the value is in-built.

I have lost all respect for the age good food guide and your readers. In short, average but very busy dishes. Service was fine, wine list good, ambience ok. When did beetroot and miso get put on the same page let alone dish.

Had a birthday party here a few months ago, and the decor when we walked in was like any European establishment so totally confused as we didn't expect from the name of the restaurant to see a Japanese fusion menu. The seafood plate kingfish was particularly good so was my mains of cod in a bisque. The dessert menu had very little Asian influence in fact the tasting platter was named il dolce. Service was attentive. Overall a lovely evening.

We had a celebratory dinner at Matteos for 30 people. The staff were very helpful with the organisation and impeccable on the night! The food was amazing, everyone is still raving about the food! So much so that we will be back for each anniversary. Experts at classy, impressive functions!

Went here for lunch. This is a large restaurant, could maybe seat 130 people. Our table of 4 were the only ones there. Needless to say the atmosphere was a bit lacking but the service was dedicated!
The room is good, space between the tables, very comfortable chairs and a subdued fit out. The menu reads OK, a sort of Japanese/Euro mix. Did not deliver for me.
My entree was a Lobster Bisque custard with various bits and pieces and whilst it tasted OK, the contrasting textures within the dish itself were a bit off putting. A bit like that feeling you get when you are drinking a glass of milk and you suddenly feel a big solid bit go down, you know that should not be there.
For main I had the Miso Cod. Just too salty and that was the dishes dominant flavor. My dining companions were far more enthusiastic about their dishes so maybe I just picked poorly or it just did not run to my taste.
Wine list is good and well thought out. Service was competent but there was no personality whatsoever, may as well have been served by a mannequin. For me, I don't need to go back to this place.

One of the best dining experiences of my life, everyone is so friendly and polite. The chandeliers are great with a beautiful colour scheme. What really matters though, the food was out of this world. Matteos has some of the best tasting seasonal menus in Melbourne. My personal favourite dish is a dessert, the Chocolate Fondant with raspberry sorbet and chocolate soil. Definitely check this place out.

Nice restaurant with good food. The Japanese seafood entree was nice as was the miso baked Black Cod. My only real disappointment was coming across three bones almost the length of my little finger. I complained to the waitress only to be told the kitchen does its best but sometimes they miss some bones and that they are not the type you can choke on (they certainly looked the type!). Not what you would expect from a two hat restaurant. But overall, it was an enjoyable experience.

Had the degustation menu with a friend. $110 each for four courses with a total of nine different dishes. Each dish absolutely amazing in it's own right. This is how a dining experience should be, the amazing combination of flavours and quality produce. A relaxing atmosphere and very attentive wait staff. Also is BYO which is a bonus, worth digging that special bottle out of the cellar for!

We had a relatively good time at Matteo's. The service and food were both of a good standard, our starters and main courses were also enjoyable. We did, however, find the wine and dessert not to our taste. 7 out of 10 all round.

How did this restaurant get two hats? our feeling for most of the time was, "I can cook this myself". I can understand feeling this at a good run of the mill restaurant but not something at the two hat end. Very disappointing, wine list was a shocker, staff ok, music, heard the same song that played when we entered 5 times! it was like being in a department store.
