I have been to several japanese restaurants on King Street and at Southbank. I the quality and value far superior at Matsuya.

Dishes recommended:

Octopus salad (entree)
Gyoza (entree)
Sashimi Boat (main - variety of sushi and sashimi for 2 people)
Unagi roll sushi (main)
Crispy crab sushi (main)
Tempura - request only prawns. About $2 a prawn.

Best days to dine: Fridays and weekend. I noticed that they have a different sushi chef for other weeknights and unfortunately his quality isn't up to par.

Customer Service: The language barrier is quite frustrating. You need to repeat dishes and insist that they repeat them back to you before they leave your table otherwise you may find out later that they 'forgot' to include a dish. Depending on the time and day of the week, you will also find that some of the waitresses also seem to avoid eye contact.

Overall a good restaurant, clean, generous portions, great Moirawaise which is the sushi and sashimi boat, I think we paid $24 for it between two and it was very good value for money. Lovely fresh and generously portioned sashimi. Good portion of seaweed salad and it was lovely plush and fresh. Only negatives were the gyoza pastry was a big too thick and doughy but soaking it in the the lovely sauce helped.

Only negatives was the service was fairly average. Just language barriers and very hard to get waiters attention it seems they stare away from you. We had to ask for water, mayonnaise, wasabi twice in order to get it. And two waitresses didn't know what gin and tonic was but it was directly sitting on the shelf in the bar. However, definitely go back, its local, its cosy, its fair priced and good food. It was packed for a Wednesday night, so thats a good sign.

I have been here many times over and will continue to return. You get great food for a very reasonable price. Moriawase for one or House Special for two is highly recommended if you want a variety of sushi, sashimi and the likes! Don't go there expecting great service however. The waitresses try but the language barrier can get a little tedious at times. Overall, definitely worth the visit!

Great choice for vegetarians, ask for the vegetarian menu when the waiter first comes around. The veggie set meal is more food than you can eat (but so good!) and the veggie bento box is also great. Good value too.

A good meal with only some langauge difficulties causing problems. I ordered steak with "wafu" sauce but was misunderstood and got "dofu" steaks. Neverthelss very good.
