Good For Groups
The façade and interior of Matsumoto Japanese Restaurant has simple and clean lines and décor, reflecting the kind of cuisine being served inside: simple, appetizing and fresh. Matsumoto is a great casual place for large groups as many banquets are offered. The sushi bar, fresh seafood in bento boxes, teriyaki beef and chicken, tonkatsu, tempura, sukiyaki and many other core Japanese dishes beckon famished diners.
The extensive menu is indeed impressive, covering all kinds of Japanese specialties. Vegetarian options are available as well. The relaxed ambience makes you want to sit back and enjoy the complimentary tea while waiting for your order. The traditional and modern Japanese cuisine of Matsumoto is reasonably priced. The staff is courteous, even helping diners on how to properly pronounce some difficult dish names. But what keeps Matsumoto a packed house almost all of the time is the amazingly delicious Japanese cuisine.

Great food, can get very noisy but kid friendly. Make sure you try the deep fried eggplant and the tofu steak, two of the best items on the menu and we've tried nearly everything! Great to have such a good, local Japanese restaurant.

Had dinner with my friends and really loved the food. The service was ok, not excellent but ok. I would recommend to anyone who wants Japanese.

The service can be a bit hit and miss, depending on what night you go but the food is great. It is also a great place to take kids as they have booster seats if you need one. Our family eats here often and we love it. Parking can be a big problem so if you live close by get the tram or walk!

I have sushi and sashimi quite frequently and have tried them at many places.
After reading some of the reviews here about this place being yummy, we decided to try it. We had the sushi and sashimi house special for two and it was a long wait eventhough the place was not that packed. When it arrived, I was very disappointed. Firstly, if a Japanese restaurant can't get sushi rice right, then there must be something very wrong.
The rice was dry and bland. The sushi were all warmer than it should be, they tasted like they've been sitting at room temperature for quite some time. The sashimi was not too bad, but I will not be paying $43 for a couple of slices of sashimi and some very awful sushi. Sad to say, if I have to choose between take away sushi rolls and this place, I'd have the earlier anyday.
We also had the wafu steak and crumbed oysters which were alright but not that special. Perhaps, our experience was marred by the lower than average sushi we had as our appetizer.

Really nice restaurant. wW were pleaseatly surpised by the quality and taste of the food. Fresh ingredients, good service, the feel to the place is a little noisy and boring but overall we really enjoyed ourselves as did our guest. Will go back again.

Just had dinner here with a couple of friends and I wasn't expecting much when they said it was fairly cheap, but I was surprised. It was great and the service was great our waitress was really attentive as we were dining with someone who was allergic to onion, I know a bit weird. So, I give the waitress two thumbs up. Definitely, one of the better Japanese restaurants here in Melbourne.

I strongly disagree this is a good Japanese restaurant and good value for money. The sashimi is quite alright but still under my satisfaction with the rate. This is not a real Japanese restaurant, it's Chinese Japanese Restaurant.
I ordered a seafood ramen and I thought it is very delicious and the food awesome with such a good rate. When I taste it, OMG. the noodle is freaking overcooked, the 60% seafood is raw one. They just cook the noodle and throw all the ingredient inside the pot. For e.g, prawn, squid and bla bla bla.
Besides that, my brother ordered a bento and it cost like Aud19. The bento is serve rice, teriyaki chicken, tempura, raw salmon and fried chicken breast.
The teriyaki chicken cook like Chinese style, I mean the taste. The inside of the tempura prawn is raw one. The fried chicken taste like you went to the food court sushi bar. Lastly, the price is expensive. Can't believe that someone said good value on money.

I go here for lunch at least once a fortnight and I've never had a complaint about this place. I always enjoy my chicken teriyaki (tori don) with steam rice and vegies and you also get a miso soup with that. This costs about $9 and is definitely good value. Other lunch specials are around that price and I think all include a miso soup which is so yum! Definitely worth going here.
