Mama Baba is the latest and highly-anticipated restaurant from multi-awarded Chef and Restaurateur George Calombaris. Expected to shake up the dining scene in South Yarra, Mama Baba has a promising Italian Greco cuisine which is a celebration of Calombaris' Italian and Greek heritage. The focus is on culinary creations that make you think fondly of grandmother’s cooking yet very ‘now’ when it comes to flavours and techniques. Pasta takes centre stage at Mama Baba with other simple and seeming uncomplicated dishes bursting with amazing flavours. A house DJ also makes music that complements the Mama Baba dining experience.

Went here last week when I was down in Melbourne for work, and was sadly left very disappointed. Funky venue with a nice vibe, so initial hopes were high, however, both the service and food were disappointing.

Service was slow, and disinterested from start to finish.

I had the agnolotti main, and was surprised that there was no sauce (not a problem in itself) but when the pasta itself is far too thick and claggy consistency, and really quite dry it didn't work. The tortellini of prawn was similarly disappointing, with the consistency of something more akin to a dim sum, again, not very pleasant to eat.

Disappointing and won't be back.

Recently dined here with two work colleagues. Found the service in the bar area to be quite aloof but during dinner excellent, informative and professional. We decided to go with the Degustation Menu which at $55 was considered good value and a good choice. We also decided to order some Coffine Bay oysters with G&T jelly.

I would have to say that these were the Smallest Coffin Bay oysters I have ever tasted and didn't realise that they actaully sold them that small. Normally they are creamy and plump. The G&T jelly must have escaped as could only taste this on one of the 6 oysters I had. Having said this the Degustation Menu was fantastic.

The food was tasty, cooked to perfection and the meal well paced. Waiter was very helpful with the wine choice. I guess in hindsight the value wasn't too bad but we did go a little overboard. A good dining experience and I am pretty sure I will be back.

Our guests were all looking forward to our lunch at Mama Baba but it ended in disappointment.

Firstly the service, our waitress was rude and did not smile for the duration of the service, we asked the "runner" what one of the dishes was, it was cannelloni covered in a thick breadcrumb mixture, she said it was Swordfish. We ordered a green tea after lunch, a peppermint tea was delivered instead.

Now onto the food, the pasta was really average, rigatoni was dry, cannelloni was overcooked and the spaghetti was slimy, so disappointing considering all pastas are made in house. The salad had sand in it, we had to send it back, and the servings were small. Sadly I will not be recommending this restaurant.

I enjoyed dinner at Mama Baba. Staff was very busy but still smiling and friendly, trying to make us feel welcome. Sat at the open kitchen bar area. It was awesome to see the chefs working away up close. One of the chefs gave us a 'leftover' salad. The food was rich and tasty. Definitely need to hit the gym now but well worth it.
