Overview
Inspired by the food experienced during his travels of South America and Spain, Matt Waldron has returned home to open a restaurant and tapas bar in Hawthorn.
With a menu of tapas and racions (slightly larger plates), this is a social affair with all dishes ideal for sharing.

My girlfriend and I arrived there around 19.00 and the general ambience was really nice. Candlelit and attractive looking decor etc. but, the plastic chairs were rather uncomfortable. Even though the restaurant was only a quarter filled, it was also rather noisy.
Firstly we wanted to order a James Boags beer but it wasn't on the beer menu, so we went with the beer on tap. Mountain Goat, which is fine, but looking down the drink list, it all seemed very limited and what was familiar seemed overpriced. The food menu looked nice, but more pretentious and lacking simple dishes.
The service was generally pleasing, however, the waitress had basic english skills and wasn't really answering any of my questions. I asked about the dishes and she just pointed at the menu and read back what was written. We were both looking forward to sharing the Paella, and I asked the waitress how filling it was (in an attempt to gauge whether an entree would be necessary, considering the 30 minute wait to cook the Paela)? She just said its this big and made a gesture with her hand and looked at the ceiling.
We ordered the zucchini flowers with ricotta cheese and they were quite nice. The batter was crisp and tasty. Bread and olive oil was also great. We also appreciated that our water was topped up on a regular basis. Well we finally received our Paella and on first appearances it looked nice, well as nice as a Paella can look anyway.
After one bite I knew it was awful and like another reviewer said, one of the worst they have had. I'd agree, but I've only ever had the dish one other time. It was a big dry mess, tasteless rice (burnt at the bottom!), a lack of seasoning, more lemon wedges than actual food, overcooked and burnt scallops, bland calamari, 2 prawns only, awful peas, capsicum which tasted old, chicken tasted funny, and muscles that looked and tasted disgusting.
We actually spat out our first muscle and didn't eat the other 8 or 10 muscles. I was too shy to mention how disappointed I was with the meal, so we just decided to not dine there ever again and grudgingly hand over $70 for a disappointing night. We also felt rather sick and I'm sure that the Paella was not fresh, probably re-heated from the fridge or sitting out all day.
"I loved the food so much I bought the restaurant". We went on a tapas bar crawl through the city and by far Lulo has the best food and value for money. Head Chef Matt and Soux Chef Suthat are Melbourne's most underrated Chef's. The Calamari with Fennel and Blood Orange salad and aioli dressing was a taste sensation. The Duck was so perfectly cooked. No fat just the crispy skin and succulent tender meat. With this experience I sat with Matt and now I am pleased to say I am a co owner of Lulo.
Modern Spanish Tapas bar's have come a long way from the days of the few bars that were scattered along Johnston St Fitzroy. I rate Lulo as the best restaurant in Hawthorn. You should try it for lunch. The degustation platter is unbelievable value at $25.00 pp and you even get a glass of wine.
Do yourself a favour and try this place out and tell them Johnny V sent you. You might get a nice surprise.
Very disappointing effort. Group of 8 booked at 8pm as there are 2 evening sittings. Narrow restaurant with bar up the side. Nearly full, with good initial vibe. Uncomfortable plastic chairs. Getting attention from staff difficult and became worse as the night wore on. Noise levels limit ordering. Several staff do not appear to have a solid grasp of English.
Over 10 minutes before water offered. Alcoholic drinks took over 30 minutes to arrive. An interesting wine/beer list but unfortunately several initial choices unavailable. Later in evening I was offered ON 3 SEPARATE OCCASIONS by different staff a particular wine I haven't enjoyed previously when the wines I wanted were unavailable. I ultimately took another 'recommended' (ie available) wine, which was OK. My point is - keep it simple and current.
We waited over 90 minutes before the initial 'tapas' for our banquet were served!
1. oyster opened earlier with a nondescript dressing
2. prawn wrapped in jamon
3. croquette (unknown contents - waitress didn't know)
There was no excuse for the wait as all three had been prepared well in advance.
4. beef roast wrapped in bacon with a parsley sauce (we were told this was a 'signature dish'), served with
5. fried mushrooms and monterey
6. salad
which was a unique 'Spanish' concept.
7. the worst 'paella' I have ever been served, with bland rice, a few mussels and prawns, and virtually no chorizo or chicken, a few peppers, surmounted by some ?microwaved peas. The dish had been prepared hours earlier, then re-heated and placed in a paella pan.
8. good churros with chocolate, but by this stage who cared. Clearly not the waitress, who later suggested I shouldn't have my gin with tonic.
In hindsight, their website is hilarious. To promise so much, and deliver so little. What a joke.
