Overview of Lulo Restaurante

Inspired by the food experienced during his travels of South America and Spain, leading Chef Matthew Waldron has returned home to open a tapas and wine bar in Hawthorn.

With a delicious range of tapas and racion (share plates), dining here is a social affair with all dishes designed for sharing. Accompanied by an extensive range of Spanish and South American wines Lulo offers a different and exciting dining experience.

As well as a great tapas selection - Lulo does paella really well - with a combination of fresh local seafood, free range chicken and spicy chorizo sausage. Paella is $25/person & is available everyday, bookings essential.

We were quite disappointed. This is definitely not authentic tapas, but with a contemporary twist, which seemed like an excuse to overcharge for small portions with average quality ingredients. Jamon was poor quality. Chorizo was ruined by being served with apple cider foam, making it too sweet. Patatas bravas were unnecessarily presented and stingy. Calamari and olives were nice. Nice selection of Spanish beers. Staff were Irish and Swedish, again robbing it of any type of authenticity. Wouldn't recommend it.

Me and my friends are looking for a Spanish delicacy and we went to Lulo Restaurante. We are satisfied that this is the right place we're looking for.

After reading some rave reviews about lulo, we decided to give it a go last night. There were 3 of us and we wanted something light, so we ordered the famed quail, the churizo sausage, roasted mushrooms and another dish with anchovies, capsicums and zuchini.

    The Food (2/5)

    1. The 1st quail dish was raw on the inside. The flesh was still red and I tested it using my knife to see if it would cut through. It did not which means it was still raw. I was not very happy at all to be served raw poultry. Luckily the waiter had the sanity to apologise and replace it without putting a charge on it.

    2. Replacement quail was fine. This time they cut into the quail to make sure it was cooked. The presentation would have lost points but at least it was tasty.

    3. The chorizo sausages were ok. Nothing spectacular but we liked it that it wasnt as salty as a normal chorizo would be.

    4. The mushrooms were good. Right texture, juicy, but perhaps a little too much onions. It feels there was more onions than mushrooms.

    5. The dish that I forgot the name was what I describe experimental. Capsicums were too spicy, anchovies were fine, zuchinis great, yellow capsicums ok, and the accompaniment paste we dont have a comment for it. Overall mixed feelings.

    6. Bread. Ok this one's funny. I actually have a picture of a slice of bread that they brought to us that was filled with flour. The bread was not kneaded properly. I saw it as soon as the plate touched the table and confirmed it when we tore it open. I have a picture below. Would you serve that?

    Service (2/5)
    1. For an above average place I'd expect someone to be at the door at all times organising reservations and tables. I think I was standing a full 10 seconds to get the attention of staff to see to my table.

    2. Waiters need to be more attentive. The only reason why I didnt leave a tip was because the amount of times I had to raise my hand and wave franticly for service. I mean the place is not a stadium and If I counted correctly there were at least 4 to 5 floor staff for only 10 to 12 tables.

Overall the experience was rather unsatisfactory given the rave reviews they have received. Perhaps their standards are slipping somewhat. Unless there was something to encourage me to return to lulo again, I don;t think I would.

Great food, albeit overpriced, spoilt by attrocious service. We should have walked away when the waiter announced that I had the last of bottle of Estrella Damm Lager. Not a good sign considering the beer is in abundance even in Australia, where it is in a local bottle shop. Over the next 2 1/2 hours we were drip fed our 6 dishes. Trying to get another wine, or even a glass of water out our 3 waiters was futile. At one interlude, my fork was knocked onto the floor, and 2 courses later (50 minutes) , I finally received a clean one, despite several requests. We were really disappointed and unfortunately we will not be back.

I have been here a couple of times for pre dinner tapas and drinks. Fantastic service, great food, however, not for the plain food and non-adventurous type. The food is true Sth Am and Spanish intense flavoured but with a modern and creative touch. Potatas Bravas was the best I have ever had, just mouth watering! Jamon was fantastic as well as the quail. Would def go back, a little expensive for some sizing of the dishes but the quality, warm cosy ambience and charming service makes it all worth while.

The food was very nice and except the scallop we almost enjoyed every single dish we tried including the dessert. About the service there is nothing much to complain either. The decor matches the modern style of the dishes but the music could be less of popular kind of latin/spanish. Hopefully we will return to try other tapas in the future.

Excellent food, great atmosphere, prompt service, Well done. I have been to this place plenty of times and its great! If you're the type of person that wants to experience a quiet sit down, then go on a monday or tuesday night. If you're into a traditional tapas then grab a seat the bar and tall tools. It surprises me to see that there is always someone complaining about sitting at the bar. Got to and spain try it out, ask for a table to dine and they will laugh at you!

Lulo don't change! Its good to see that you can do both seating and cater for a wide variety of people. Further more, if you take the time to make a booking the staff can usually place you on a nice table. Get in early because this place on a Thursday - Saturday night is Jumping! Lots of great latin-american music, entertaining cocktail waiter and helpful staff. Cheers.

I returned to LuLo on the basis of several recent glowing reviews, both below and in the commercial media, after a very unsatisfactory meal with friends a year ago. Servings are small, let alone for sharing. It remains crowded, and we were sitting on a small raised table with stools.

A long selection of beers and a reasonable selection of wines, virtually all imported so choose carefully as quality varies markedly. I was discouraged from sampling a few beers as we had already ordered one bottle (between two)! Thoughts of turning the table/stools over at 8? There were only 4 sherries available, with only one dry.

Tapas were fine. An empanada was well done, with a light shell, chickpea filling, served with a salt and cinnamon powder. A scallop was crumbed and fried, served on a bed of finely diced tomato.

Wagyu beef tartare wasn’t particularly flavoursome, except for the aioli placed on top, and was served with a few blobs of aioli and romesco, with some slivers of toasted baguette on the side. Lamb backstrap arrived in a terracotta bowl, served with chimmichurri and a delicious eggplant pickle. The lamb was moist and well seasoned, but, unfortunately, was served lukewarm.

One special was a modest piece of yellowfin tuna, seared with a few nigella seeds sprinkled over it. Next to it were three white anchovies on halved potato discs. On the other side were radish discs upon slices of grape, with more nasturtium flowers placed on top. Beautiful flavours, great presentation. But why spoil it by pouring ajo blanco around the fish, and allowing the soup to congeal before serving it? It tasted great, but overwhelmed the tuna.

Another special of cuttlefish escabeche was served on cauliflower ‘jelly’, which amounted to a cold slice of mousse which tasted cheesey and detracted from the whole. This came with avruga caviar, blackberry ‘pearls’ and nasturtium flowers.

While I would have preferred the lamb last as requested, the dishes come out one at a time. I am not sure if this is because of preparation times for the kitchen, allowing concurrent serves of the same dish at neighbouring tables. The table was so small that we were constantly juggling plates, glasses cutlery and the candle (!) to make room.

Still peckish, we ordered another special of ‘spring artichoke hearts’. The terminology implied freshly prepared produce. We received 5-6 heart quarters still briny from the pickling fluid. There was still vinegar coating some small peppers on the dish. As a result, the accompanying saffron sauce was curdled. It was poorly executed.

The servings were small and despite my misgivings, I felt we should try a few more dishes off the standard list. The quail, stuffed with guava, on a bed of pumpkin, accompanied by a shredded pear and witlof salad was easily the dish of the night. The serve of quail was generous, tender and beautifully cooked, though I couldn’t detect much guava.

Morcilla has been made in-house. Five generous discs are surmounted by shredded apple, but none of the promised sauce. I found them very dry and without the usual mouthfeel. I suspect the proportion of blood is low and the amount of filler higher to account for this. The apple was refreshing, but a light sweet puree would have been preferable. Another dish of mushrooms, pinenuts, muscatels was substantial, but very oily, which was an unpleasant finish to the night.

Service was friendly but familiar, which may work with some. Lighting was bright, but lowered just before 8 – I should know, our table was moved while we were eating, so the staff could reach for the dimmers.

Others may disagree, feeling I am being too hard. I am spending my own money, and feel that sometimes a flood of reviews with unwarranted hyperbole unreasonably raises expectations. The meal was better than last time, but being perched on stools for two hours to spend $227 is frankly ridiculous.

I think LuLo tries to be too much for too many. Fancy overworked descriptions applied to generally underwhelming food.

Lulo has absolutely hit its straps in the last eight months or so: earlier reviews no longer apply. I have eaten here twice in the past month and at least two other times in the last eight and all have been absolutely delightful and devoid of any negatives whatsoever. Early last year I ate there and had a poorer experience so can appreciate some earlier comments.

Today, you can venture down Glenferrie Road with confidence, past the mediocre and the underwhelming, and settle into this cosy corner where the service is informed and slick, the menu seasonal and creative, and the crowd mellow: it's all good. (I can taste the pork belly now). By the way, don’t expect a touristy Spanish restaurant in the style of many found in Fiztroy, it’s much more sophisticated and cosmopolitan (leave the sombreros at home amigo).

I've eaten at Lulo with my wife and friends every few months for the last 2 years. The food is excellent, and the staff are always great. They really know the food that is on offer and are very helpful. They have a great selection of traditional and modern Tapas, and you'd be hard pressed to find better in Melbourne.
