Overview of Koko

Though situated in a prime location at Crown Towers, Koko is not the least bit trying to be hip. It just exudes serene elegance. The lantern-shaped lights giving off a soft glow and the zen pond in the middle of the restaurant sets the mood for an unforgettable Japanese dining experience.

Koko's menu changes by the season, reflecting its passion for fresh meats and seafood in its expertly prepared sashimi, sushi, udon noodles, tempura and teriyaki. Featured are teppenyaki and á la carte menus, a sushi bar and a sake bar along with tatami and teppanyaki rooms that overlook the Yarra River and the Melbourne skyline. The zen-like atmosphere extends to the quiet but efficient service of its staff.

For diners who tend to agonise on what to order in a Japanese restaurant, they can opt for set menus of chicken, beef, seafood and special lunch. A generous selection of sake goes well with the meals. Koko at the Crown is also well-known for its differently-flavoured ice cream that surprisingly thrills the taste buds.

I was first taken here by a Japanese friend and the interior struck me immediately as beautiful. The views outside were great and I wondered about the food. The menu showed me it was going to be expensive (turned out to be $480 for 4 people) and my sushi entre was okay but not great. My main was far better and overall it was a great, if expensive, evening. I've returned a few more times since, once with a very picky veggo friend who loved it, so I must say the food has been consistely good. However save Koko for special occasions unless you're very wealthy (or connected, like my Japanese friend was).

My partner took me here for my birthday as a special treat. I adore Japanese food and I am very partial to raw fish. The sushi chef here did an amazing job on our selection of sushi and sashimi. I loved the water in the middle of the restaurant, very relaxing. I highly recommend it.

Amazing night had by myself and my GF. Food was specactular, and they gave us a free glass of mumms champagne each because it was a special occasion. Could not fault a thing, perfect table overlooking the flames of the yarra too.

We arrived without a booking but were lucky enough to get the last free table. The interior by internationally renowned designer Tony Chi is impressive with a picture perfect water feature taking centre stage.

We thoroughly enjoyed our first visit but our second, about a month later, didn't live up to the first. The menu has changed a little. In our first visit, we fell in love with an oyster shooter and the sashimis were fresh, it had a bittier texture. On the second visit, we came especially for the oyster shooter, which wasn't on the menu anymore, but they made us some anyway. It wasn't the same ones, and it also disappoint in flavour. A few hours later, we all had to visit the toilet. Apparently, our lesson here is, you shouldn't order outside the menu. We will keep that in mind from now on. Overall, very pleasant first time, average second time.

Good Japanese, but you would not have too far to get better value for money. If you are doing the touristy thing, it will suffice, but I will give credit where it is due, the service was fantastic. Very pricey for what you get, but what would you expect at a venue like this I guess.

Koko is tucked away on the 3rd floor at Crown away from the crowds on the main level which makes it a bit difficult to find but well worth the trip upstairs. We had the chefs special sashimi, prawn and scallop dumplings, crispy soft shell crab nori rolls and it was all excellent! Nice wine list and very attentive staff, we will definitely dine here again.

Great food, fab if you're after somewhere lovely to relax with someone special. You'll always be paying for the location due to its, um, location, but get past that and you'll have a beautiful meal.

Both times I've went I have been embarrassed by the same teppanyaki kitchen staff. He is not funny and I don't like it when people make inappropriate comments and disrupt our conversations on more than 30 occasions to make rude gestures/comments in an attempt to be funny. It was not funny and one of my guests asked me whether he has a grudge against us. I told her no and that he was like that last time. Will definitely won't be back until they fire this person.

The food is good, but not that great for its price. I've had far better. Staff service (ie the managers/waitresses) are very kind. But this person has not failed to embarrass me twice. When I pay over $1000 to eat I don't expect to be embarrassed and have some kitchen staff tell me off.
