Had been looking forward to dining at the Kitchen Cat since I booked a few weeks ago. Were having a family weekend in Melbourne and really wanted to go somewhere special. Several of my first choices were already booked, so I settled on here based on reviews on some other websites. Unfortunately, we were all really disappointed.

It all started off well enough, we had drinks at the lovely bar area and our cocktails were some of the best I have had in a long time. The restaurant looks great and does have a nice vibe to it. However, when it comes to the food it all goes pear shaped. To begin with, I had difficulty finding something on the menu that sounded appetising, but eventually chose the veal osso bucco, which was very ordinary.

It came on a small cafeteria type plate with nothing else. Same for the steak and lamb dishes, just pieces of meat on a plate with a small saucer of sauce. Really nothing special at all. There were seven in our party, and each one of us said how disappointing the food was. Don't get me wrong, it didn't taste awful and we all finished our meals, but for a restaurant with a 'celebrity' chef, it was nothing to write home about.

Can't complain about the service, which was just ok. We had gone to a cheaper and more run of the mill restaurant the night before and had enjoyed our food much more. When booking, I also had to leave my credit card details in case we didn't turn up. Apparently, they take $30 per head for no show. Only other place I have ever had to do this was at Tetsuyas in Sydney. Definitely would not return or recommend this restaurant.

Thought this place was quite good, but nothing exceptional. Pasta mains were pretty tasty, starters were ok. Service a little patchy. Wine is expensive compared to the food ($20-25 for pasta and $14-17 for a glass of wine).

Example of pure celebrity arrogance. Pretentious menu completely in Italian with no explanation in English. The lamb main course is three lamb cutlets on a completely empty plate - no garnish, no sauce, nothing. Service is lukewarm with a bit of attitude which starts at the door with the maitre d'. The space is very nice and has an interesting ambiance so this place is a wasted opportunity.

Yeah, naaaa, it was just bad from start to finish. Took 20 minutes to just get menus, service in general was slow. Food took near on 2 hours to come out and at least 4 of our 9 plates were horribly undercooked, and all were tiny. Oh and when my partner asked the waitress what was in the risotto, she replied 'rice'.
