Kanela Melbourne’s only flamenco restaurant-tapas bar that is dedicated to the art of flamenco is run by the family of two of the countries leading flamenco artists, Richard Tedesco and brother Johnny Tedesco. It has become an institution among local flamenco aficionados , International touring companies (Fura del Baus, Bolero Flamenco), and Australian celebrities (Kate Cerbrano, The Cat “Sol y Sombra” Empire) for its quality of performances.
Kanela boasts a myriad of sensational tapas served to the visual splendour of fiery flamenco dancers. Regular performances by the 'Arte Kanela' guarantee the spice isn't reserved for just the cooking. The combination of great Spanish tapas/raciones and that always humorous hospitality, Kanela is undoubtedly one of the city’s most important and dynamic venues.
Situated in the Spanish quarter of Melbourne, often brimming with a bustling vibe indulging on the traditional style of Spanish cooking, whilst being mesmerised by live flamenco performances; with regular guest performers from Spain, Kanela offers a truly intoxicating and unique dining journey! From Thursday to Saturday the group 'Arte Kanela' perform live flamenco shows.

It's a very authentic tapas bar. Looks amazing and the food is sensational. Great quality and very fresh. The sangria was just the best we couldn't get enough. The staff are very helpful and help you out with your spanish (bonus!). Will be back for sure!

We visited Kanela on a Wednesday night and there was no show, the shows are only from Thu - Sat. First thing I noticed is that the place is quite small with not too many tables. If you do wish to visit Kanela from Thu - Sat apparently you need to book 4 weeks in advance.
The service was very good as there was only 1 other table with people that night, and the food was also very good. I'm not Spanish so I don't know how authentic it is, but I did enjoy the flavours. The chorizo was beautifully smoked, and the calamari and salted prawns were well spiced and tasty. The only thing with the prawns is that they come whole and you have to peel them, I'm not a huge fan of doing this but they were tasty enough for me to endure.
We also shared a traditional paella and this was also very tasty. For dessert we had the home made san churros, they were ok but I prefer the ones from the San Churro chain stores. Overall I would recommend you give a try, next time we go we will be visitng for the show.

Fantastic. The food was amazing! My friends came down to Melb from Sydney so I really wanted to impress them and did I ever, well Kanela did the work for me! The Flamenco show brought two of us to tears, it was so passionate! After dinner we stuck around and had some more cocktails (very good) and it was great to be able to have a drink with the performers after the show. Overall, I can not talk any higher of the place and the people that run it! Good work and keep up that amazing dancing.

Very nice restaurant. The food was very tasty the selection of Spanish wines and drinks was great and the ambience was fantastic. We were all very happy with our night and left with smiles from ear to ear. Not sure if the below reviewer went to the same venue one of our favourites was the chicken! We have already booked for next month (they were booked out till then..). Looking forward to bringing more of our friends here.

Nice looking venue but do not eat here!!! I went there expecting something amazing based on the reveiws here, but was sorely disappointed. I ordered tapas - muscles were steamed without any flavour, chicken was boiled with watery salsa and calamari was dreadful - look like the kalamari from the frozen food section of the supermarket. After this we were not about to try the prawns. Maybe usual chef was on holiday but this was the worst food I have been served in a long time.

The food is not 'authentic' and no way near the standard of what you should be expecting when it comes to Spanish food - being a spaniard who has lived and worked my whole life in Spain within the hospitatility industry I can assure you this is no way near the standard it could or should be.
The flamenco however is amazing - brilliant and comparable to any artist in Spain, the waiters could drop the attitude though. A little 'too cool but not really' for my liking.

Had Paella which was great. Tapas were absolutely scrummy. Would recommend this as a must to try. The best was the flamenco, which the foot work was spell binding!

Good tapas (especially the garlic mushrooms, yum) and fabulous dancers and musicians. An entertaining time is always had here. Although not a big place, it has a great atmosphere. Highly recommended.
