Went here for fathers day breakfast, not only did we have to wait over 45 minutes for breakfast even though restaurant was nearly half empty but when I got my meal I found several hairs in it and so I returned it and they brought me a "new" plate which was the exact same meal minus the hair. Food came back cold and tasted rubbery.. Not fresh at all. Another person at my table got his meal but only had 1 egg not 2 eggs and when he got his meal back there was also several hairs and food was cold again.
$10 corkage per bottle is too expensive. Pre-prepared sauces reheated and served cool/warm was not my idea of fine cuisine. Not impressed overall. It has certainly gone downhill since the last time I dined there 10- 12 months ago.
I wouldn't recommend the Boathouse to anyone. Be warned.
I was given a $100 gift certifcate for my birthday in September last year. I called the Boathouse and was told I had 1 year to use it. About 10 months later we decided to use the gift certificate to celebrate our engagement. Upon arriving and displaying my gift certificate I was told I couldn't use it because the business had been sold and the new owner refused to honor it. As a consequence we ate somewhere else that night and will never visit the Boathouse again.
I should mention that we never ate at the Boathouse and, therefore, can't give food, ambience and value scores, however, I was forced to score these items before I was able to submit this warning to other potential Boathouse visitors.
We dined here for the first time tonight and were very impressed. Beautiful atmosphere, great service and the food divine! There is a limited menu and the portions are on the smaller side, but are actually just enough. We left feeling content and not like we'd over eaten. Would definitely come back. Highly recommended!
I had already booked the restaraunt for a family lunch, looked at the internet in case there was a menu, and found this page, which shocked me after enjoying the place a couple of years ago. My son was determined to take his fiancee there, so we went ahead, I didn't say anything.
I was very apprehensive after reading the latest comments, but am pleased to say the restaurant was great! Our food was good, nice wine, and looking around everyone was eating all their meals, didn't see a complaint. The service was excellent, I have had (slightly)better food, at another exceptional (and expensive) restaraunt, but we had the kangaroo, and I have never had it as tender, lovely!
I voiced my initial concern to the owner, while happily paying the bill, and she explained that there had been a problem, now solved with new chef, and I would agree, will return.
What happened? We have been going to the Boat House for years. It has been our "special" local restaurant since we went there the first time at least ten years ago. It was where we took my best friends to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary when they were here from Toronto, it was where I celebrated the start of my company, and, unfortunately, it was where I took my entire family, 8 of us to celebrate my wife's 50th birthday.
It was the worst $400 I ever spent and we will never return to this establishment.
Calamari, was off and was returned (no charge to us, this was the high point of the evening). Bruschetta - unpleasant, dry, stale.
Note - Vegetarian options - none (our fault should have checked). Kangaroo - The boathouse has always been my benchmark for the most succulent delicious 'roo and have been recommending it to my friends and colleagues for years, this time it was the worst I have ever had, dry, overcooked, over spiced, I still ate it, only because I was too embarrassed to complain (again) and it cost me Aus$33.00
Salmon - small portions, very ordinary and with CAPERS? I mean really? CAPERS and salmon?
Overall I partly blame myself for such a horrible evening as I should have checked the menu first. We have always found the best restaurants did not need to embellish the basic dish or experiment too much to present something special to the diners. In the case of the boathouse it seems the menu is composed of dishes so pretentious they have crossed over to the inedible.
We shall now start our search for a new 'special' restaurant on the peninsula. After so many years of loyalty to the boathouse we shall never return again.
Just don't go, the new kitchen staff is a disaster. This had been one of our favourite local restaurants but our experience last night was so disappointing. The food wasn't just bad it was inedible, the menu has changed and the quality has disappeared. The only thing I can say is don't go.
This is truly a dining experience and every visit is the same, food amazing, atmosphere beautiful and the service perfect. A great place for an anniversary or just to spoil yourself! Try the blue cheese oysters, unforgettable!
Hmmm, that was in 2006, last few visits have been pretty ordinary. Seafood is often overcooked and the $29.90 two course special that runs most nights has changed to only include some cheap menu items. Lift your game guys.
