Jirochiyo is an old favourite of ours. Guaranteed to get good food with friendly service. Sushi boat is our favourite, followed by Udon. Stacks up well against the local restaurants in Tokyo and Yokohama.

This restaurant is in the style of modern suburban restaurants, almost bistro type interior with windows that open to the street and a clean, uncluttered feeling.
The staff are very good and friendly. The food here is suburban Japanese, very westernised, do the standards ok but nothing overly exciting. The Beef Tataki is a poor version, gyoza a bit limp and watery, the sushi is ok but really not up to the standards expected in Japanese restaurants nowadays.
Being a local, it is for me a place to go when I feel like some Japanese food but don't want to travel too far. Generally though, when I get my Japanese food craving I am willing to travel a bit further for better and more exciting food.
This place is a solid suburban performer but there are better options not too far away.

I have eaten here on many occasions over the last 6+ years. For the purposes of the review I will review the restaurant as it was this visit. I ordered a main sushi my partner ordered salmon teriyaki we also shared an entree tempura. The tempura was as usual crisp with no excess oil, this is without a doubt the best tempura I have had in Melbourne, every time the vegetable selection is familiar yet interesting enough to make you wonder what the next piece might be.
Sushi is by far the best I've ever had anywhere the freshness of the seafood is perfect and the sushi melts in your mouth. Eating the sushi here requires me to pause and close my eyes every mouthful. The salmon teriyaki was well flavoured with a fresh tasty salad. It was moist and not dry, delicious. The service is delivered with a friendly quiet precision by the staff.
I have still not had a bad experience coming to this restaurant nor has my extended family for the last 6 years. The thing i can't get over is to have never had a bad tempura here, its so easy to mess up!.

I have no idea what the person below is on about. I've been to this place dozens of times and have never felt dissatisfied with the food. As far as the "westernised" comment again, I cannot disagree more, Jirochyo offers clean, simple Japanese cuisine with no frills but cannot be faulted on quality (especially the sashimi) or authenticity.

The best suburban Japanese restaurant in Melbourne. All the standard fare done exceptionally well. However, for a change try the Japanese menu for some special dishes, although it is hard to drag yourself away from the Oysters in Ponzu Sauce and the Tempura Prawns. A good range of Sake makes for a great meal.

In terms of Japanese food in Melbourne, this place for its price serves better than average food than a lot of places. Pleasantly surprised and only visited there during a trip across town (not in my local suburbs). Tempura is great and the beef dishes are pretty spot on. Good service, good rice too. Pleasantly surprised and wished we had a Japanese restaurant in the eastern suburns that serves similar quality.

The best range of sashimi in the suburbs, and the value for what the produce is fantastic. Plus they do gluten free soy sauce, and everyone is very lovely and a great take away menu. You won't be disappointed.

Standouts for me were tsukemono and tempura - both very tasty and tempura was light, crisp and not oily. Other dishes very good but tempura outstanding.
