This was supposed to be a good restaurant, considering we'd been there before. This time, however, the ten of us were treated to an awful staff performance of forgetting meals, what part of the banquet we were up to, mistimed meal delivery, basically the worst service we'd come across. Staff, however, were falling over backwards for a wedding reception: loud and disturbing. Never again, and I'll be warning anybody else who plans on going there.
Was craving yum cha over the weekend I decided to come and try out Imperial Kingdom. We arrived around 1:30 pm on Sunday and had to wait a short while to be seated, the place was chockers! I would definitely recommend booking for weekends.
We were blown away by how courteous, efficient and hospitable the waiters and waitresses were which is highly unusual for asian restaurants, particularly extremely busy asian restaurants where it can take a long time to be served! It probably helped that I could speak a small amount of Cantonese and Chinese since a few of them had limited English speaking skills.
Food was delicious, probably not a fan of the vegetarian steamed bun, the fried squid was a little overcooked but the yam balls, spring rolls, sticky rice and especially the sago mango pudding was yummy.
The ambience was ok. The whole place could probably go with a renovation and I might suggest that the waiters/waitresses remember to go to all the little corners of the restaurant because we ran out of food at times.
Overall, Imperial Kingdom isn't a bad yum cha place. I would consider going back.
Well Joe was back in a Big way! I've never seen anyone do things with a Peking Duck like that before! (lucky they put it out of its misery soon after). Great food, great atmosphere and a nice view, not to mention excellent company. Ronnie smiling, Greg laughing and Gary giving mouth to mouth resuscitation to Joe and taking his time over it! And not forgetting the lovely ladies we were with. One of the best nights we've had! A definite contender to Cheng Moon. PS Who the heck is the PumpkinChef?
Awful service-rude, poor English especially the senior staff, do not go unless you are Cantonese speaking, she got angry when we did not order a dish she recommended, cannot explain the dish/One of the dishes was off on the night/Restaurant smells.
We visited our local Indian a couple of years ago and had a bad experience. Have been back three times in the past couple of months. On two occasions the food and service were ok. Our last visit was on a Thursday night and it must have been the chef's night off. All the dishes had that reheated taste and texture. The onion Bahjee was rubbery and the tandoori chicken was dry and tough. There was only one other couple in the restaurant which is hardly surprising. This restaurant really needs to lift its game. We won't be going again.
We are visitors from Sydney, so coming to Melbourne it was great to be able to sample some yum cha in another state. This restaurant was recommended by a friend and was also in the gold section of the Melbourne entertainment book. I have to admit the atmosphere during the day was a bit iffy and made me doubt the food quality. But once the steamed dumplings and steamed pork buns came out my doubts were fast gone.
The food was beautiful and the mango pudding to finish off was one of the best I have tried. The range of food was good and some of the desserts I had never seen before. Because of the gold card we got a 25 percent discount which brought the price down to 25 dollars! great value, great food and the staff were friendly and accommodating. The only thing I'd say is it could be cleaner, I sat down to a dirty bowl and dried up soy sauce bottle.
Food was substandard compared to other yum cha restaurants. Service was poor. Venue looked like tacky wedding reception. Would not go again unless parents remarried.
Some of the best white bait I have tasted, great food, however, place is very run down, which is a little of putting when eating. Service is ok when they're not busy.
