A very disappointing experience. Scones were overcooked, 'jam' was a watery concoction of chunks of apple and red juice, impossible to spread onto scones! Very meagre serving of cream, had to ask for more. Overpriced tea. Had to ask for more milk, and hot water. Slow service, but pleasant waitresses. Won't go back.

Visited from Adelaide last week, early August. Cakes out of this world. Raspberry and pistachio cheesecake delightful, not cloying, and lime tart v nice, could squeeze more lime over as I adore the flavour. Tea choice v interesting, had one with lavender flowers incorporated. Just a taste, love to return next time. Choice if meals looked good.

We had brunch (I had lunch, my girlfriend had breakfast), and both the Lasagne from the specials board and French Raisin Toast were delicious. Neither were mammoth servings, but enough to satisfy. Service was friendly and attentive, prices were fair. For some old world charm and a unique experience, give it a go. And, unlike a nearby cafe, the Hopetoun hasn't replaced expensive bananas with a cheaper alternative!

The presentation at the tea room was rather sophisticated and detailed I must say.

The whole place is very unique. The food and the flavours that arrive at the table - pick from their daily Specials board - is something else. Always will take special guests to this unique little place - amongst the beautiful architecture - old world of Melbourne - Block Arcade.

Was talking to the waitress the other day and she said that the Hopetoun Tea Rooms is going through a rejuvenation stage, where service, food and ambience are going to go up a notch.

Having just experienced a midday visit 5/11/09 we were bitterly disappointed with the service and food. Pointed to and not taken to a table for four, had to find extra chair ourselves. Traditional scones chosen by two of our party, two each micoscopic and unheated served with cream from a can which was already returning to liquid on delivery to table.
Toasted tomato and ham sandwich provided for 8 yr old was too mean to satisfy a childs appetite. Slice of cake ordered was forgotten and eventually arrived tossed onto unadorned plate, no cream, sauce or attempt at presentation. These people are charging top dollar for miserable food and service. Melbourne has achieved exceptional standards in restaurant food and service these days. Don't let this sort of shabby exploitation spoil our reputation.

Old world charm in this quant tea room situated in Block Arcade. Fantastic selection of cakes, most wonderful fresh cut sandwiches and of course potted tea. A little cramped and crowded when busy but a small compromise for a step back in time.

Surprised no one has yet posted a review. I just visited Hopetoun for brunch today. Got seated relatively quickly and the staff were friendly. Service was attentive albeit a bit pushy (we were asked 3 times in 5 minutes if we were ready to order although we just picked up the menu).
Lovely Victorian like decor in a very comfortable green colour throughout. Food was decent, had the salmon sandwiches with fairly generous filling. Was a little disappointed with the vanilla slice (the pastry was a bit too tough to tear through). All in all a nice experience, I will be back.
