I stayed at the Novatel about a year ago with my partner and we had an unforgettable meal here. The service was great, the waiter had so much knowledge about the wines and we had a great experience all together. I highly recommend this place and have been going back ever since.

My wife and I had steak (after reading other review beforehand) and were very happy with the meal. Very good steak, presented well, but underdone to our liking, if you want well-done forget it. Service was good, food was good ambience is Ok if near the window. We were happy with the evening but wouldn't say it was value.

What on earth was going on here last night? We caught up with interstate relatives who wanted to eat here because they were staying in the hotel and had an Advantage Card but boy! What a disappointing experience! It felt like we were eating at a William Angliss training restaurant as all of the waiting staff seemed to have no clue about customer service and the supposed 'maitre d' was completely useless and almost entirely absent for the evening.
We were virtually ignored for most of the evening, had to request bread when the bread waitress kept walking past our table without providing us with any even though we were waiting ages for our meals. Then the food that arrived was average, one of the dips (white bean I think?) was dreadful and the cannelloni arrived with a very bland and basic tomato sauce that I could have made better at home.
I would have complained on the night but as I mentioned earlier the maitre d' was conspicuously absent and also I didn't want to embarrass our guests (who were already embarrassed enough after choosing the place). With so many fantastic restaurant options available in the St Kilda area, don't waste your time or money here, you will regret it.

I was staying at the Novotel and decided to have dinner at the Grill, based primarily on the excellent review provided by the interstate visitor in May this year.
My experience along with friends who were also in house guests at the hotel, was disappointing to say the least. The ambience was very good and the service was good, with one notable exception.
One guest had his steak removed, literally from under his nose, just as he was about to take his first bite, apparently he had been given the order from another table in error, and what added insult to injury was his replacement steak was smaller and thinner.
All of my guests were generally disappointed with the food and felt that it was overrated and generally not good value. The grill specialises in steak dishes and I would not recommend departing from these, as the other choices such as lamb shanks are not up to normal Melbourne pub standard.

I was staying at St Kilda at the Novotel for the weekend after a business visit to the city. The day before I had taken clients to Flower Drum in the city and came away immensely underwhelmed. It had surprised me because of all the rave reviews it has had over the years. In contrast, the new Grill 3182 restaurant at the Novotel had no reviews, but it did have a sunny terrace overlooking St Kilda beach and it did have a good-looking grill menu and I have a passion for wagyu.
My friend is a fish lover and after consulting the menu we decided to take a table under one of the umbrellas (and this is Melbourne in May - amazing), order a bottle of local pinot gris and stay put at the Novotel. By 1 pm it was quite busy but fortunately we had got our entree orders in. Actually, we were both attracted to the prawns, from somewhere called Crystal bay, which came with a creamy avocado dip, segmented oranges and a small water cress salad.
The combination was terrific, the creaminess of the avocado nicely balanced by the tangy orange and slightly bitter water cress. The mains were substantial and my wagyu was cooked as it should be, grilled firmly on the outside, rare throughout. It came with a fascinating mash potato dish with pancetta. Odd, but it worked. And the beans were crunchy and fresh. Yvette's salmon looked good, but I'm not mad about salmon, though I did take one of her roasted tomatoes.
We shared a plate of chocolate goodies for dessert, the soft centred chocolate fondant being the standout. I think St Kilda really does restaurants like Grill 3182 very well. The seasisde atmosphere works well especially when it is sunny, but even when I ate breakfast the next morning inside it had a lazy brunch feel to it.
In fact, it would be a great place for Sunday brunch as the markets are just outside the front door. This was a very pleasant dining experience and good value (especially if you have an Advantage Plus card).
