If you're tired of the livelier yum cha ambience (random shouting in Cantonese, rowdier kitchen and crowd), the Golden Dragon Palace is the restaurant to go to for delicious yum cha in a more quiet and unhurried setting.
The name of the restaurant itself connotes a sense of grandeur—the dragon carvings, chandeliers and the grand leather chairs. Despite the upgrade, Golden Dragon Palace is still old school Chinese, offering separate extensive menus for dim sum, a la carte and takeaway dishes. Regarded by yum cha enthusiasts as the best all-around yum cha place, Golden Dragon Palace's food is a cut above the rest. Savour the mainstays (dumplings, siu mai, pork buns, congees, and many more) with mango flavoured desserts or pair them with any of the 600 wines in the restaurant's award-winning wine list.
If you want your yum cha experience with family and friends to be leisurely, you'll appreciate the ample space and child-friendly amenities that the restaurant provides. Fine yum cha is complemented by the upbeat and friendly service of the wait staff.

Last night (1st April 2012) our family went Golden Dragon Palace for my Mum’s Birthday dinner. We had a great time and really enjoyed. This was first time I went to there. It is a very nice suburban Chinese restaurant; especially there was a live piano performance to make everyone more enjoyable. The atmosphere is almost magical, also the waters made you very comfortable with their excellent services during the dinner. A must trying Chinese restaurant in Melbourne!!! I definitely will go back there.

Inconsistent service is an understatement. We were there with guests for yum cha and the service here is absolutely horrendous. Rude waiters and waitresses that couldn't get our food orders right and we had an unacceptably long wait for the food to come. Oh and forget about the food. We didn't even have time to eat before the waitress came yelling at us that the session is over and made us leave. The most embarrassing experience and am never going there again.

A very efficient and pleasant Yum Cha but the seating is on much in need of re-upholstering, very heavy chairs. These chairs have sharp rough edged tacks in them that snag your pantyhose. I ruined a $20 pair on their wretched chairs that need throwing out now.

This Restaurant is pure elegance. It is luxurious, relaxed and also child friendly. The live piano performances are welcomed in the classical style Asian theme and a main feature is the giant asian carved sculptures set behind glass cabinets. You are welcomed warmly to the restaurant by the manager and shown to your seats where the chairs are made out of heavy wood, magnificent and comfortable. The heavy table cloths and cutlery shows class.
The atmosphere is almost Magical. We have been to this restaurant more than 30 times and yes though it hits our $$ pockets hard, it is well worth it. The Hot n Sour Soup is the best we have ever eaten. The tofu, pork, prawns and mushrooms are succulent and there is just enough chilli to make this the most enjoyable soup. The assorted dims sums are home made you get (3 pcs) pork, prawns and shark fin served in a bamboo basket. Delicious.
The san choi bao we have had both the meat and seafood they are equally so yummy the taste just is amazing with the hoi sin sauce. The chicken or beef satay skewers are so appetizing as the meat just about falls of the skewer. The peanut sauce is the perfect compliment to this dish, as it is not too spicy. Another true favourite here is the peking duck you get (2 pcs) and the crispy skin is just the best and the meat is succulent served in steamed pancakes, spring onion, pickled cucumber and the sweet sauce.
The waiters have this one down pat and serve it to you elegantly from the trolley with silverware. The jade prawns are soft and fresh as served with baby spinach and crushed garlic sauce. The mandarin beef is deep fried in a light batter that is crunchy yet light as to taste the sweet and tangy sauce.
A bit too hot for me but hubby loves it, is the honey peppered steak it is cubed with large pieces of sautéed onion in a honey and black pepper sauce. Fried rice is delicious. The fried ice cream is coated with coconut breadcrumbs and soft inside, gently set alight. Although this restaurant is a bit expensive, it is worth every single cent. Special occasions or not!

I had my wedding reception at here Golden Dragon Palace. Food and ambience were great. Waiters were helpful and courteous. Everyone had a great time (as far as I know!). It was on the expensive end though. Averaged ~ $200 per head.

Although not authentic yum cha food, but their creative dim sum are lovely, one of my favorite yum cha place in Melbourne. A must try in Melbourne.

My favourite yum cha so far in Melbourne. The best har gow (prawn dumpling) I have ever had! The soya chicken, braised duck and apple tarts are really good. Beautiful room, good service. Double the price of what I normally pay at other yum cha places but will go back for a treat.

Ambience wise this is the best Chinese restaurant in town I have been to. Very spacious and lovely fitout. Food for yum cha is quite reasonable, not as tasty as Tai pan nearby though. Quite pricey yum cha, I guess you pay for the less noisy and crowded atmosphere.

This is a beautifully appointed restaurant done to a reasonably lavish style. I know much of the fitout was imported from China. The Yum Cha is pricey, as are the mains but the three times I have been there the food was delicious and service very attentive. Beware the cost though.

Have been here twice, once for yum cha and once for dinner. When I went there for dinner, the staff were very friendly, professional and polite. One thing that puzzled us was that our waiter removed our napkins from our table while other patrons had them on their laps, as we should have had too!
Food was slightly overpriced, but I went there knowing that and the portions were quite large. For yum cha, the food was very nice, though the service did seem very rushed, and our table was missing chopsticks and other items. Overall, it's rather average, service and food are fantastic at times, and not that great at other times. Will probably continue going since it's quite close to home though!
