Food was great, delicious, you will be full and might even take some food home, staff very friendly, good value, just avoid the toilets.

The last time we went there, every table was taken (we have been 4 times and this was on a Friday night). The food is fantastic and the staff are friendly. The food took a while to come out as I don't think they expected that many people to turn up on that Friday but it was worth the wait. (I think word has caught on about this place to non-africans as when we first started going, we were the only non-Africans there)

I had a lentil dish that was great and my partner always has a raw beef dish (that they also offer cooked) with spices and green chillies through it. Smells fantastic.

It is very cheap and great to take people there who have not been - around $80 for 4 people (3 people had 2 African beers each which they don't seem to stock anymore) I would recommend booking if you are bringing a large group.

The place can be noisy - there is a pool table and bar in the next room and don't expect somewhere that looks like an inner city place. Overall, fantastic!

Having never had African before our table of 5 didn't really know what to expect, being the only table there at 7.30 was a slightly worrying sign, and only one other table sat down in the two hours we were there.

Its a very plan space and the restrooms were an adventure?! (but you find that in a few Asian or Indian restaurants so). However, the waiter was friendly and the food was ok. I can't rate it on its authenticity having never tried Etheopian but everyone seemed to rate it as good, not great but nice enough. Wouldn't go back but glad we did try it, it was definitely an experience!

First time trying African food. Had a Saturday voucher so went for lunch yesterday. Unfortunately, it didn't say on the voucher or on the menu (the voucher was the same as their normal buffet pricing $25 p/p) buffet was only for dinner. Luckily we also had a buy 1 main get the other half price. Great food. Had a chicken dish (yedorro tibs) and beyayanetu yefisge watt (good value) which had a bit of everything, similar to an authentic thali dish fm India.

I didn't like the taste of the injera but my partner loved it. It's the fluffiest and softest giant picklet ever, top looks like crumpets. It tastes tangy. Used like naan to eat with the dishes. You can order rice instead. And yes, there was cutlery on the tables lol. We shared both dishes, too full to finish every scrap. If you're unused to chilli, let the waiter suggest dishes but might have to ask what has been brought out if you're unfamiliar with the cuisine.

Very friendly service, fantastic introduction to African cuisine. Food must be good as a few Africans came in for lunch. Wine only by the bottles. Unfortunately, there didn't seem to be any desserts on the menu. Def will be back to try the buffet another day. Simple and plain looking restaurant, amenities need some attention. http://www.gibeafricanrestaurant.com.au/

A very plain restaurant, but the friendly and helpful service, and absolutely mouth-watering food was second to none!

This is the best African restaurant in Melbourne. The food is AUTHENTIC, flavorsome and great value. You will NOT go home hungry. Staff are extremely friendly. Make sure you have Ethiopian coffee. Will be back soon.

I think Ethiopian food is going to be the next big thing in ethnic food. The Gibe Restaurant is quite basic in its set up, but more than makes up for it in friendly service, good food and value for money. The staff are fantastic and only too happy to help you choose dishes if you are unfamiliar with the cuisine. Try eating the authentic way where a group of people share a large platter covered with injera (ethiopian flat bread), topped with various dishes, which are then eaten with the fingers.

Be aware that the food can be spicy. There are also a number of vegetarian dishes to choose from. Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee, so don't forget to try a cup or two or three. A lovely experience all around.

A fantastic Cafe Restaurant with wonderful authentic African/Ethiopian food. I recommend the buffet on a Saturday night, particularly for those who have not eaten African food before. It gives you the opportunity to sample several dishes. This is a more casual restaurant and provides value for money and an interesting culinary experience.
