Overview of Flower Drum

“Flower Drum” is a traditional dance that is all about beauty and elegance. These same qualities apply to how Flower Drum, the restaurant approaches its fine dining Cantonese cuisine and service. Flower Drum expertly combines savoury Cantonese dishes, fine wine and impeccable service to come up with a singular dining experience. The years saw distinctive dishes such as aromatic baked crab shell and braised lamb claypot reaching ‘favourites’ status while the Peking duck continues to be Flower Drum’s signature dish. The restaurant has been awarded Restaurant of the Year from 1999-2001 and again in 2004 by the The Age Good Food Guide.

I have never written a review about a restaurant but I felt so strongly about the meal I had last night at the Flower Drum that I felt I should warn others. This place is Totally overrated. We had the banquet which consisted of 6 bland under seasoned courses. The sauces had too much corn flour, the fried rice was dry and the presentation, there was none. It was such a huge disappointment, I have had better Chinese from my local takeaway in Sydney.

I am trying to comprehend how they justify the cost as the service was also lacklustre. The waiters were clearing plates away while some of us were still eating. Will never go back there again.

Went to the Presidents Cup in Melbourne, so took the wife, and with out doubt the No 1 chinese restaurant in Australia. Asked the waiter for his recommendations and we were not disappointed. If you are number 1 it will cost you so no point in worrying. Down side the Amex numbers went to Canada the next day.

We dined here on Friday evening. The food and service was everything we expected and more. Yes the decor was a little tired, but hey the place is an institution so why change a good thing. The lamb rolls were divine and the crayfish in fluffy white egg omelette was light and tasty. The King George whiting with spicy salt and lemon was crisp and delicious.

It's definitely a place we'll be returning to when we revisit Melbourne. Thanks to our waiter Barry for recommending such great meals and for the attentive service provided throughout the evening!

Put simply this was the best Chinese food I have ever head in my life.

The meal which consisted of entree, main and two beers came to about $90, and while I wouldn't pay this on a weekly basis, the food was definitely worth the money.

The staff were very very polite, and we never had to wait more than a minute for service. Well worth the money for a special occasion.

This is one of those 'special occasion' restaurants. It's a tad expensive but definitely worth visiting at least once. The food is perfectly cooked every time, and on top of that, the waiters go out of their way to make your visit enjoyable. It's a treat!

Booked here for a lunch as we could not get a dinner reservation while in Melbourne. So we had big expectations! Service is great, but from there the place although clean and upmarket is old inside. We had a good variety of dishes and truthfully we have had better from a lot of quicker less fancier asian restaurants. I am sorry to say this, but this was probably our biggest disappointment while on holiday in Melbourne.

I have to counter the glowing reviews. Having been there last night, this place is like going to a country town in mid '70s and going to the local Chinese restaurant.

The first sign of concern was that there were only westerners in the place. Chinese know their food and don't go to this place. The decor is tired, tired, tired! Wait-staff had old, tired uniforms, wore name badges(!) and managed to get our order wrong on three separate occasions, there were 4 of us. The tableware was cheap white crockery, cheap nasty cutlery and wrinkled, cheap white table cloths. Paper doilies abound.

Food was straight out average. Not as good as the sort of food you'd find in Box Hill or Doncaster. No new and interesting flavours, no sauces, no beautiful presentation, just the food plopped onto the cheap white plate. People, go somewhere like the Supper Inn. You will have a substantially better culinary experience for less than a quarter the price!

This is the second time we visit this superb restaurant. Service was outstanding and food delicious, not as special as the first time but still felt very special.

Have been here 4 or 5 times before including as a kid where I experienced Sang Choy Bao for the first time. Was always held in great regard but as a very expensive special occasion restaurant. My most recent visit, however, was at best a disappointment. The bill was around $600 for 3 of us. The peking duck (having been to Red Emperor only a few days before) was not up to par. The skin was not crisp and the duck meat had too much gristle and fat to be served in a restaurant of this standard.

Everything else was "nice" but not amazing which at those prices it should be. Great restaurant to go to when someone else is paying. Won't be rushing back to this restaurant that used to be at the top of my want to go back to list.

For those who think this is just another chinese restaurant, but using premium ingredients, think again. Sure you can get fried rice and beef with black bean sauce, but is that really what you want for a special night out? I go by waiter recommendations and enjoyed pearl meat, baked crab shells and other dishes that didn't necessarily appear in the regular menu.

The service was great, the food was great. The wine list offered a broad range for those either on a budget or looking to blow out. But to be honest, I thought the bill was unacceptably high. There were just two of us and we tried to keep spending under control, but the bill ended up being just shy of $400. Our crab dish was a relatively small portion of food, cooked very well, but $50! Strangely, I enjoyed it but the value-for-money just wasn't quite there and I have the feeling that it will be a long time before I head there again.
