Fabulous venue! It's all pretty casual. You can sit on the balcony, watch the ducks on the river below and imagine that you’re in the country, instead of just a few minutes from the city. You order and collect your food and wine at the counter (also coffee, scones etc, but at a different counter).

The menu offers a range of relatively simple yet stylish (but not bargain-price) dishes, such as chicken, burgers and fish, mostly prepared on the grill (you can watch this!). The staff seemed a little stressed on the day we had lunch there.

Revisited in late October 2011: still a great venue, and all the above comments continue to apply. Is there a staffing issue here? This time they seemed fairly "laid back" which was not really an issue (in fact, it's in keeping with the atmosphere!), but it's mildly disconcerting to have to thump on the counter to attract their attention to place your order!

Asked staff if they could prepare gluten free food, which they said was fine and were quite happy to do. We watched the food get prepared. They didn't listen to what we had said. The food was prepared and cooked with gluten. Then they proceeded to tell us it was gluten free when we had just watched them prepare it. Would not recommend to anyone. Kitchen staff was rude and lied point blank to our faces.

It's such a shame that this lovely location has such an average cafe. The food is below par & overpriced, the service (what there is of it) is inefficient & often quite unfriendly. The only reason to go here is the location.

We came as a big group. The place is very relaxed and quite old school. You don't get table service but that's what we liked about it, no uptight waiters hasselling you. The burgers were huge! All the food is cooked on big 'I wish that was mine' barbeques. Simple but good. We had the scones and vanilla slice which were delicious. Everything looked so tempting I could have stayed all day and sampled. Highly recommend for groups, families and casual day out types.

If you are up for a casual dining experience in one of the best locations in Melbourne then the boathouse is worth a look. The boats are an excellent after meal exercise to work of the BBQ food.

Having been to quite a few of Melbourne's best kept secrets, we had high hopes for The Boathouse. The location was spectacular and it truly feels as though you have stepped out of the city into another time.

If it scones and coffee that you want then you will thoroughly enjoy this place. The breakfast is average, but I would say that it is an experience worth having. The scones are excellent and coffee are excellent and accentuate this pearl in the middle of the city.

We made the mistake of visiting Fairfield Boathouse for breakfast. The location and ambience are fantastic however, the service is haphazard and basic and the food is greasy - eggs and bacon. There is no table service and you have to order your food and drinks from 2 separate places. Such a shame as the location is wonderful!
