We chose to go to Dozo because we had a 25% off voucher, but even with the voucher, I didn't think it was good value. The serving was small, the taste was not authentic. We ordered a beef hotpot for about $16 or $20 and it had about 6 pieces of beef and some vegie in it.

We have become regular in Dozo. Food are great. Staffs are friendly (also to my kids). Green tea crème brûlée is so smooth and delicious!

Sukiyaki soup was too sweet. Batter for tempura too heavy. Banana fritter used frozen banana. Red bean pancake too dry. Wanted to charge extra $2 to change vanilla ice-cream to green tea ice-cream.

Prompt friendly attentive polite service, how unique! Good beer and a few sake options. BYO. Excellent value. Very good suburban Japanese (ie as good as all the other Japanese restaurants throughout Melbourne that everyone raves about in the papers, give a 10 for food, and when you get there, think - hey, Dozo is just as good). Just wish it didn't look like it was stuck in a shopping strip (which it is).

We arrived at 8:30 pm the restaurant was half full. 1 hour and 10 minutes for two entrees and finally our main meals were served after 1 hour and 35 minutes. What was more frustrating was people that came in after us were served their food first (they waited only 50 minutes.) Customers looked unimpressed, 6-8 dollar corkage and flat coke. The food was good quality but not worth the wait, disappointed.

Dozo do really solid Japanese food that often has small but appreciated twists. The katsu curry is a good example - the pork cutlet sitting atop the curry with the addition of shredded vegetables. You won’t get it like this in Japan (think more a sea of curry sauce) but it's a nice touch.

The bentos are great value too, coming in at $16 for the sashimi version, $12 for teriyaki beef or chicken and also $12 for the vegetarian version. It might sound strange, but the tea they serve with bentos is worth taking note of as well – it's a blend of Japanese green tea and roasted rice and you can by a container of it for $7.50. This isn’t high end Japanese but it’s not aiming to be - it’s well-made Japanese food that’s value for money.

Quite an odd little place, with some curious touches to the menu, eg. that old suburban Chinese restaurant furphy, the fried ice cream ball! Others might disagree, but bad Japanese food is a rarity, and the food is ok (patchy) here, but that's all.

We have dined at Dozo a few times and gotten takeaway there as well. The food is good quality Japanese cuisine with some interesting variations (salmon tataki is a favourite). Ambience is very good; the decor is modern with jazz playing quietly in the background.
