Although the Rom Caffe coffee they use here has really good potential, unfortunately, the quality is too inconsistent. The same coffee is used in the European/Wine Room stable as well (not surprisingly, having been started by the same owner).
Sometimes it is great but most of the time it is just plain bland, especially in a milk based coffee. Probably has to do with the fact its imported into Australia and had sat in the container or storage for too long on some occasions. The barista is actually very good but they need to use a bigger basket for extraction more from the coffee in my opinion.
Food here is not bad, more suitable as a lunch than anything. Price is reasonable.
Tables and chairs here seem like they were nicked from the university end of year exam rooms, with full shakiness and all intact.
We came in with no expectations except to get a decent cup of coffee. We were seated at a bench by the friendly, smiling waitress. It looked squeezy but once seated it was cosy and we had a good view of the people walking through the laneway. Being Sydneysiders, we were pleasantly surprised by the ambience and service.
The waiter and waitress were friendly and proactive even though it was a full house. 10 points for the waiter for checking if we had ordered and asking if we liked some water after taking the coffees away - something that we would usually have to ask for. The coffee and pizza were average but we were happy to tip them for the great service. A lovely place, better than average.
I went in to get a take away coffee. The rude waiter deliberately pushed past/into me and some other people waiting to pay their bill, so I walked out. I had had a coffee here once before it was ok but nothing to write home about.
5 years ago this was a Melbourne institution. The rapid decline is saddening. The panini's are small and tasteless and overpriced. Coffee, whilst still good is more expensive than better establishments. Worst of all are the staff. Disinterested and unhelpful to say the least. Whilst there are about 10 of them, the intra-staff chat is obviously more important than the customers. Don't even bother!
Well and truly at the bottom of the hill that it's been going down. Coffee is over extracted, machine tastes like it was cleaned the last time the male staff took a shower. Some of the staff are friendly, many are deliberately not. I have been overcharged, gotton awful food and very average coffee. It's a shame that a place with such a reputation and a great location is wasting it away so steadily.
