I had high expectations from De Bortoli restaurant. Our party had travelled a long way to go there. My experience was average. The food was average. The service was average. It would have been nice to see more of the view without having to go outside. It was all pretend Italian.
The food was beautiful and they have an excellent head chef, the courses are well proportioned so you can order a three course meal without worrying about not being able to finish. Prices are good for this level of dining.
The staff are very friendly and are well briefed on the menu, however, did seem a bit disorganised as all four worked the whole floor and they had to ask three times which wine I wanted with my main (it was the one recommended on the menu) also twice during our diner plates were smashed on the floor in the kitchen, we weren't sure if they had a clumsy waiter or an angry chef.
Overall a great dining experience, however, in terms of Yarra valley wineries you can do better.
The food was some of the best authentic Italian food outside of Italy. You can tell the chef has worked at Londons River Cafe, with simple clean fresh flavours.
The room needs a face lift to be brought up to speed with the scenery. Worth every cent.
Not a single complaint about the food, in fact it was very good. The entire dining area needs a face lift. The views are completely blocked. Floor to ceiling windows are needed to capture the stunning location. Thanks to the head chef who came and sat with us outside, a very talented man.
Poor service, shame because the food is delectable, the new head chef has done some great things with the restaurant. Great views over the vineyards. The restaurant itself looks a bit tired.
Midweek for lunch - good food, well presented without fuss (plate of mixed cured meat followed by grilled rabbit with lemon, salad). Let down a little by poor service and waitress cleared away my companion's plate whilst I was still eating (very bad marks for that Australian trait).
