This place is an institution, and nearly always packed with Chinese, who know value when they see it. Food is very good for the money, and there are some gems - eg the spicy prawns and sweet potato pancakes. Dumplings are good value, and more flavoursome than offerings in some Box Hill cheapies.
Service is perfunctory, but what do you expect. For a slightly less frantic atmosphere, slightly better food and higher prices, and much friendlier service, try their other restaurant across the road. Have just noticed I think all these reviews are for the branch at 605 Station Street, not the quieter one at 590 Station Street.
Even though this restaurant isn't expensive as such, with dishes ranging from $5 to $14 or so, the food here is disgusting. There are a lot of dumpling and hotpot places popping up everywhere in Melbourne, most of them are so bad I would rather have foodcourt food which are better.
I not usually too harsh on cheap eat places but the noodles, fish and dumplings we had, were all so badly executed, I was disgusted and not to mention the MSG is so predominate in everything here, it leaves the mouth super dry. The prices are higher than foodcourts, but the quality is much worst. That's just not on.
The dumplings weren't too bad but the meat was way too fatty and had no meat taste (it's typical China Chinese food mind you, but it's disgusting to eat it in Melbourne even being a Hong Kong Chinese), the skins were thick but still acceptable, the MSG was killing me. Other things that I've tried here are unforgettable. Make it unforgivable.
Good place to go if you're in the mood for dumplings. It's very much a cheap and cheerful eatery. You get what you pay for, so service and ambience are very much non-existent, I mean what can you expect from place that charges $7.50 for a really huge dish or a plate full of dumplings.
1. Even though the food servings is generous, 90% is noodles. Dumplings are edible, but has deteriorated in standard over the last few months. Quantity instead of quality food.
2. Choose your seats - the section up front is better ventilated. Seats closer to the kitchen/toilet is squishy and uncomfortable.
3. Customer service is terrible, as we were refused seats upfront, even though there were plenty of seats and they were not reserved.
