The Age Good Food Guide 2010 - Chef of the Year: Andrew McConnell
Cutler & Co. has quickly become a fixture of the Melbourne dining circuit. Located in Fitzroy, Melbourne's first suburb and industrial area, Cutler & Co.'s interiors layer the old with the new. There is a separate dining room, a wide cellar and a bar.
Modern Australian cuisine is dished out in the restaurant, where beef, fish and seafood are front and centre. The bar provides more casual food options. People meet here for small eats with cocktails and aperitifs before dinner or after a show.
Cutler & Co. can be described as a more casual fine dining. Impeccable service supports the delightful cuisine, resulting in one of the best dining experiences in Melbourne.

Based on our experience at other Andrew McConnell restaurants we went there with raised expectations. We were not disappointed, an excellent experience, food, service and atmosphere. Definitely will go again.

We flew in from Sydney and headed straight to this highly recommended eatery. I was very pleased with my first experience of Cutler & Co, the food is exquisite and you can taste the chef's love and dedication to his creations. Waiters are friendly and accommodating of our requests. The only downside with this eatery is the acoustics, it was a friday night and I could barely discern what my partner was saying let alone the diner sitting next to us. So while my stomach was satisfied, my ears were burning with the intensity of the noise from all the chatter!

A great experience all round.
The food was delicious and whilst the menu is at the expensive end of dining out, we were impressed at the added extras, serving size and freshness.
A variety of dishes were tried by our party of four. We all started with the mixed entree which, @40pp is expensive but they brought us a great range of things to try. The kingfish was sublime. Chunky pieces. Like butter.
After a few wines from their short but varied wine list we then had the slow roast chicken, beef and fish for mains. All were great but we were impressed at the ability to do something new with chicken.
Great atmosphere, a little pretentious but we were pretty rowdy and received no remarks from waiters or guest. A fun night all round.

Went to this place (19/02/2011) with an open mind after reading a few bad reviews but can say the food and service was outstanding, busy Friday night sitting when every restaurateur should be at the top of their game. Service was attentive without being overbearing and the staff to client ratio is quite good. Staff were informative/helpful in the wine selection without being smug or patronising (take note other sommeliers) don't piss your diner off when he is going to spend $100 or more on a bottle of plonk. Took the degustation menu and were impressed with the simplicity and subtlety for a summer menu.Tasting plate starters were classy and quality such as cured trout blini, Highlites were the Onion and Miso soup with Crab and Abalone, Kingfish with avocado, Short rib beef, Peach foam and strawberry sorbet was a divine summer dessert. We would go back again as the degustation menu did its job in tempting the diner to explore other dishes on the menu. Andrew McConnell deserves the accolades. One criticism is the loud ambiance it is not a dining room but a dining hall, a bit of acoustic softening would be good.

It is so upsetting to arrive and be greeted by rude bar staff. The restaurant is getting a bad reputation because of the rude staff. I am so amazed that the good food guide didn't pick up on the poor service. I've known three people, in addition to my own experience where service was an issue. Particularly don't go to the bar, because the service there is the worst. The bar men are rude, and really did spoil my experience. So much so I wanted to write a review.
Cut me off while ordering, told to sit down in a firm manner, waved a hand in the air in no general direction when I asked where the toilets were. The worst of it was I felt like I was being mocked by him and his 'mate' at the bar when I was asking for advice on the drinks on the menu.

Yum yum, fantastic degustation menu. The trout melts in your mouth and the last dessert with the violet ice cream and sour cherry was mind blowing, if the surroundings weren't so classy we would all have licked our plates!

I definitely expected a lot more. The staff were not as attentive as I thought they would be for a restaurant of that calibre. The food was average for the price. At the end of the meal, we had coffee and my friends' was 3/4 full and burnt.

We had a pleasant Saturday dinner here. MM made the best call when we were offered a choice of breads. His rye was very good. My sourdough looked cute (must be cooked in tiny flowerpots) but was rather ordinary. My oysters (4 claire de lunes) were fantastic, obviously just opened, with their delicious juices intact. MM's seared scallops were sweet and juicy.
I thought the horseradish dressing sounded as if it could be overpowering, but I was proved wrong. MM's pork belly was fantastic, moist, tender, tasty, with crisp crackling and succulent vegetables. My confit of ocean trout was equally good. Our side dish of nicola potatoes was very good. We had some bubbles to start, then I had a sauv blanc and MM a shiraz from the short but well selected list of by the glass wines.
The main wine list has some gems. Bill came to $200 (with tip), fair enough for the quality of the food and service.

Underwhelming to say the least, pompous service with a side of attitude not to mention a fillet of fish complete with bones, so disappointed considering it was a special occasion!

Is this not the best fine diner in Melbourne currently? Love the idea that finely crafted food is set amongst a contemporary ambience and attentive service. A pricey night out but who cares when it's this good. Food, wine, service, I cannot fault!
