My fiancee and I are from Sydney and on our last visit to Melbourne 3 years ago we stumbled upon Cocoro. At that time it had only been open for 3 weeks, and we had a very enchanting evening. We were there for 3 hours eating and chatting to the waitress and the cook, who seemed all to happy to keep the food and drinks coming even though we were the only customers after 9 pm.
They offered us sake and some wonderful stories. The food was amazing and it has a warm place in our memories for the last 3 years. We constantly talk about going back and hoped that they would still be open for business and it was booming for them.
Fast forward to present, we finally got to return to Melbourne and made sure we reserved a table for two a month in advance (we read somewhere the cafe is doing wonderfully). With tingly fingers, hungry tongues, empty stomachs and smiley faces our day had arrived to visit the cafe once again. We hoped that cafe hadn't changed. Our entire day revolved around our special dinner and we were early. I opened the door and stepped in and a rush of warm memories came flooding back and the same waitress (we now know she is one of the owners) greeted us.
We sat at the same table and studied the menu, diligently. We ordered miso soup, seared salmon sashimi, 3 scoops of salad, oyster with ponzu sauce, chicken yakitori and mackeral with ponzu and orange sauce. My partner and I barely said a word to each other through out the meal, except for when we looked at each other and went "this is so good" or "have a taste of that" or "yummmmm" or "good choice".
We remain enchanted with this wonderful japanese cafe. It is unpretentious in its elegance, warm and inviting in its service and earthy and delicate in its food. When will we be going back to Melbourne?
Cocoro do modern, gorgeous Japanese and do it with a tonne of love. The butter squid is to die for. Really lovely room with great, genuinely warm service. The wine is really well (cheaply) priced. This is not pretentious chic at its warmest. GO HERE. You will LOVE IT!!
With the advice of one review, I decided to check this place out. Being a Saturday night, the place was fully booked. The one waitress seamlessly took every order and removed empty dishes - and even had time to offer recommendations, explain the dishes and ask how was everything. Top class!
The food was just as good, especially the sushi platter. The seafood literally melted in the mouth and the sparingly added condiments such as seaweed and Japanese mayonnaise were a superb accompaniment to marry the flavours. Three words: quaint, affordable, cosy. Thanks for the review, kylie2003.
The food at Cocoro was amazing. Everything was apparently handmade from the delicate sauces and dressings to the sweet array of desserts including a huge green tea parfait. We tried the salmon sushi carnival special, huge raw tasmanian oysters with a ponzu dressing and a dish consisting of half an eggplant with a melt in the mouth beef and radish sauce. Delicious!
The restaurant was candlelit with soothing jazz music playing in the background. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable and seemed to know every second customer who walked in, a very welcoming place that we will definitely be going back to. They also sell an array of pottery, perfect for gifts.
