I've been to Claypots several times in the past and enjoyed it. Recently, however, I've been very disappointed and problably won't go back for some time.
We ordered two clay pots the Cajun and Kerala. We had to wait a long time and while the ambience was good, the seating was uncomfortable, an old railway seat, nice idea but no fun to sit on. Our food arrived without any fish, when we complained the waitress was not easy to deal with and not helpful. We reordered the same dishes and had to wait again, still didn't think much of the dishes. Mussels quite tough and didn't feel fresh. Not good vale.. the Cajun better taste than the Kerala..which really is pretty poor.
I love this place. It has the best seafood in town but the service and particularly a waitress (with bad communication and customer skills) soured our dining experience.
I have been here twice, first time we went into the bar to wait for our table and had the mulled wine. It was delicious. We only had to wait 10 minutes before being seated and the second time I was lucky enough to be seated instantly.
The food is phenomenal. I strongly recommend the Morocan Clay Pot. The scallop sashimi is always fantastic & worth the $3 each price tag. I went there with a friend recently. We had the Whitting, 5 Scallop Sashimi's & The Morocan Clay Pot & 2 Orange Juices for under $100.
Sensational clean fresh seafood, not a lot for pure vegetarians but there are a few dishes. Great place to take lots of friends so you can order a variety and try different fish. I will go back again and again.
Sea food is absolutely sensational, the service not that much, if you are not familiar with the place it is quite confusing where to get your drinks and how to order. The decor is odd (giant octopus about to attack you?). Would I go again, yes the crabs are fantastic, when on a Monday night as this place get seriously packed. With who? Your boss to hope he picks up the tab!!! First time I spent $40 per person (1 prawn as entree + main) without grog, last time $70 per person but loved every bit of it. (1 prawn as entree+ tapas + half a seafood stir fry).
You can't book here which I really don't like but it seems more and more restaurants are doing this unfortunately. We ordered the stir fry plate and some crab. The stir fry plate was very good but it seems the waiter didn't get our order for crab which was sold out by the time we asked about it. Instead we had silver dory which was good but a bit big for the three of us. Overall a nice meal.
Went to Claypots last night and I guess a few things must have changed since the previous reviews were posted:
* No bookings were available, so we had to wait (around 1/2 hr) however, that was expected due to the popularity of this place (didn't expect it to be so busy on a Monday!)
* While waiting, we adjourned to the side bar (which was indoors) and ordered some drinks. The turkish coffee was great, and the wine was cheap and good.
* Once seated, the table was a little cramped, however, with such a small shop front, and so many patrons, completely understandable. I've been to restaurants with less space, so this wasn't too bad at all.
* The food was fantastic, however, also a little pricey (especially in small groups) however, considering how much we got, and it was all fresh seafood, not too bad at all. Overall, very nice and quite a treat.
Absolutely delicious, we had the banquet and I don't think I've ever been so full in my life! The courses kept coming and I couldn't stop eating. They just kept getting better and better and I couldn't resist!
We have visited this restaurant twice. It was fortunate that we were warned prior to our first visit that this place "Accepted no cards and was BYO only!" Being prepared is a good thing.
POSITIVES: The friendly and helpful waitstaff were efficient, never missing a request nor forgetting the order. Some tableside chats and recommendations for food was a plus (perhaps, because it was not busy on the Tuesday evening). The dishes oozed with Asian and Mediterranean flavour and coupled with simple, yet elegant presentation.
Recommendations: Garlic Prawns ($9 each), Chilli Crab (3-4 mini-King Crabs that comes with a dozen mussels served on a bed of fragrant rice - $40) and Moroccan Claypot ($15).
NEGATIVES: The seating area was a little cramped, and the table (for 2) barely held the crab platter. The lighting was quite dim, due to the oceanic paraphernalia hanging from the ceiling and walls. However, the positives do outweigh the negatives - good food and service was what we came here for.
Had a really average experience and wont go back again. Were told initially that we couldn't sit a certain table because it was set for four and we were two and then they sat us at another table set for four. Then they had us sit down outside at our table only to be told we go back inside to read the menu board and go next door to their bar to buy a bottle of wine. If I am going out to eat and at a restaurant which is not particularily modest with prices, I find it ridiculous that they can't take orders from the table and bring wine to the table. We were there early but they had run out of salad ingredients, the bread they served us was tough and old and the waitresses had no problems blocking my way twice when I went to the bathrooms instead of waiting or stepping aside to let me through. They need to organise themselves better. The seafood was good but have had better experiences there before. Also if sitting at the tables near the toilets, you can smell the toilets. Not nice.
