This is the place to go for pasta on Lygon street. We had dinner there tonight and the pasta was sensational. The pasta tasted home made and the menu was full of traditional italian dishes from the various regions. We have a fussy four year old and he loved the kids lasagna! Recommend recommend recommend.

I've lived near Lygon St for 4 years, and Carlton Espresso is the only cafe where I buy coffee from. The waiters are all Italian, and extremely friendly. I recommend their panini pancetta for breakfast, fresh roll with prosciutto and fried egg. Awesome with friends on a sunny Saturday afternoon drinking wine in the setting sun. Amazing Italian ambience, and very reasonably priced.

Arranged for a group of us (10) to have an early meal while we were in Melbourne before heading out. Made a reservation for 10 people. When we arrived we were greeted by a waiter who proceeded to argue with me that I had made a booking for 20 and not 10. In any case the service here was non-existent even though there were 5 waiters and we were the only table, getting their attention was pretty much impossible.

On the brighter side, the food wasn't too bad. The menu for dinner is very very limited (just pasta's) but the quality is quite good. I would recommend the pappardelle or the lasagna and the prices are quite reasonable.

Had a quick lunch with a friend at Carlton Espresso, during one of their crazily busy periods. Love the communal tables, we squeezed into a corner and had wonderful coffee and the prosciutto wrap. Simple but tasty, the popularity of the place is deserved. Service was limited due to the sheer amount of people there, but the lady who served us was lovely. Will go back.

This is the real deal. Forget the menu waving touts that infest Lygon Street and come to a real osteria. An open dining area and bar, with tables out the front and a terrace out the back.

Unconditionally excellent piadine and foccaccie literally made with the best meats and the freshest ingredients. And farmer comes in on a Sunday morning with a box of the freshest imaginable basil. Beautifully cured salami hang in a dry room in full view. A chestnut crepe with ricotta and fruit compote was perfect. I look forward to trying the pastas.

A wine delivery system ensures the perfect drop, be it a floral arneis or a magnificent aged brunello. Campari and spritz Aperol aplenty. Pity about the coffee, which fails to excite, especially when served with milk. Take your Lavazza as an espresso, nice and strong, at the bar. Just like in Italy.
