The fried dumplings had some sort of breading on them for some strange reason. Other items served were ok though. Get the dumpling steamed, they're better. Value can't be beat. It's a dive, so don't expect much there. They don't care about you, they know they've got a billion other customers lining up to get in.
Not as good as I'd hoped really. It was so busy and noisy you had to shout to talk (also over the hideous music turned up loud) and the waiters kept serving food to the wrong tables. I didn't go for the service though! The food was average. Not as amazing as I'd expected given the reviews from friends and online. Might give it another go because it's decent value and order something different and see how it goes.
Ok, I think this is about managing expectations. This is a Chinese canteen, with the pros and cons of a Chinese canteen. Pros: pretty good dumplings (excellent prawn and pork dumplings), very hot food, very fast, extremely cheap.
Cons: shared tables, bits of food around, DIY tea in big vats, stuff floating in the soy tub, a friend of mine swears she saw a rat but they mostly stick to the kitchens. And yes, the customers and waitresses will be mostly Chinese and moving like hummingbirds. This is not a restaurant, and you shouldn't expect it to be. Still, it's a classic, and I always go back - just pray they fry the food hot enough to kill all the bugs.
Don't ever get the vinegar from that vinegar bowl. It is by far one of the most disgusting thing I've ever seen in a restaurant. Pieces of meat floating on top not to mention the oil that the light shines on the vinegar. It makes me think that they recycle the vinegar by pouring it back into that metal bowl. Absolutely filthy.
Not to mention the greasy table that is plain disgusting. Service is terrible but that's what you get for cheap food. If you want to go to a better dumpling house that actually provide service but slightly dearer but exceptional dumplings, there's a shop in Victoria Street. That is a quality restaurant that is relatively cheap as well.
Man, are you guys kidding??? If you are paying these prices for food, you ain't getting restaurant quality service. Maybe you complainers should pay a bit more than a couple of bucks.
Stay close to the fabulous dumplings, don't get too adventurous with the ordering, relax and enjoy the experience!! The service is crap, the music is crap but this place is great and one of the city's great secrets.
The service was abhorrent - when my curry came out and hadn't been reheated properly, the waitress snatched it ouf of my hands without saying a thing, only to return with the same awful food 10 mins later after it was re-heated in a microwave. As it was a chicken dish, I was genuinely concerned. The food was disappointing and the staff shockingly bad - did they ever realise they're in a service industry? Literally the worst dining experience of my life.
One of my very best favourite places to go, my tummy always feels so nice when I walk out, the food is fresh and arrives fast! The kind of place to go when you want to sit, eat and leave, not really for long lingering meals. Go in the quiet times to avoid possibly having to share a table with strangers! But generally, love it!
Crowded, rude......I don't like the place! with raw dumplings, rude service and 2 hours later we received our pumpkin cake. They actually attempt to shove 2 spring onion cakes into our faces and said "pumpkin cake?". Wonder what happened to the place! before it used to be alright they can barely even speak or understand English!
We didn't stick around to eat the food. The place was disgustingly filthy and that was just the greasy tables and filth encrusted menus, goodness only knows what level of hygiene they adhered to out the back were the food was prepared. I'm as adventurous as the next person and lived in China for 5 years so I've seen some unsavoury sights in restaurants but there is no excuse for plain old bad hygiene and poor housekeeping in this day and age. It smells, it's filthy ... we couldn't bring ourselves to tempt fate with the food and we voted with our feet.
I used to love this place but feel the quality has gone down over the last couple of years - pork dumplings were smelly and fatty. Beef dumplings were marginally better. Spring onion pancakes were good. It is relatively cheap, but honestly I'd rather pay a bit more for satisfactory meal. Don't think we'll be going back.
