What a mistake. $10.50 for a slice of cake that tasted like a packet mix cake. We were sitting outside surrounded by other diners that were smoking (thought this had been banned). Never again!
I wish I had read these reviews before we found what we thought was the "perfect" table at this awful place. While waiting for overseas visitors to meet us, we should have realised the sort of night we were in for when we actually had to walk inside the restaurant and place an order for our first drink, even though the place was only half full.
The food arrived reasonably quickly, but was very disappointing. Our lasting impression of this place was the incredibly inefficient and discourteous attitude of the staff. As a rule we don't verbalise our misgivings about shoddy service or food quality, we just don't go back and tell anyone who will listen about our experience.
However, our embarrassment at choosing such a lowly venue to meet our guests meant we piped up when paying the bill (!), our measured complaints were met with the attitude "who gives a". When there are so many other restaurants creating a pleasant dining experience, give this one a wide berth.
I really can't believe all the bad reviews on this place, I can only rate it with the cakes it had and the cakes are just 10/10, it was so good I had to serves! Service was quick and polite, and the place has a higher class feel to it. The cakes were around $10, a little expensive but what I and my friend had, its worth it!
The service at this restaurant is appalling. Staff are rude and do not care about ensuring customers are happy. My booking for 9 people was incorrect and they gave away our table. The greeter was rude and dismissive. When I asked why they hadn't called she said "I have too many customers to bother to ring people". We went next door and spent nearly $1000, so their loss!
Never again would I step foot in this place! Simply horrible! To start off we ordered the Balkan Burek with the Greek Style yoghurt. My mother makes this and eating it fresh is simply beautiful. Cafe Greco's version tasted like it was a week old and there was only a small portion of it accompanied by a massive amount of yoghurt so three quarters of it was sent back. That was entree.
My main dish was easily the most horrible food I have ever eaten at any restaurant. Out came a piece of meat that looked like it came out of a Dinosaur. No kidding this thing must have been almost 1kg. Burnt to a crisp on the outside and red raw in the middle, hardly medium. No salt, pepper or marinade on it! With it came some flavourless roast potatoes and one 90% raw tomato, whole. After getting through about half of this dish I gave in, I couldn't stomach this any longer.
My girlfriend ordered the calamari and whilst they were better than my dish, weren't much good either. To add insult to all of this, we had to wait almost 40 minutes to get mains and the place was not even full.
Service was almost as bad as the food, staff looked like they really couldn't be bothered. Not Recommended.
When I am in Melbourne I like going to this venue. I found the cakes to be fresh and the coffee quite good. The servings are larger than in Sydney and I don't go when the cafe is usually busy. I found it fair ...
Went there for wine & tapas after work. We were sitting outside which was delightful, even though it was a cold evening the heat lamps kept us warm. We ordered the dips & we not given anywhere near enough pita for 2 dips let alone the 4 they brought out.
The first waiter we had was wonderful, he was friendly and spoke English well. We then ordered round 3 of drinks from a waiter, who stuffed it up 3 times.. (how hard is it to repeat an order on a machine) and brought the menu over to get us to point to what we wanted. Some of the older staff that have been there since before the renovations are fantastic and they are a great asset to Greco's as a whole.
Best Coffee I ever had from there was made by George, who has now left.. Best Waiter (who has also left) would of been Antonio who was always there to have a laugh and make a patron smile. Whilst the renovations may look nicer.. Alot of the old staff has left which is a disapointment.
Hated it!!! Ordered food and the waiter didn't understand English, and then when we finally received it, all four plated were dirty and we had to send them back t the kitchen, NEVER AGAIN!!
Service was horrible, we booked a booth only to be told that there is a 5 people min requirement for a booth once we got there. Staff was extremely rude and food was average. Great range of desserts though...
Part of the Zampelli group.
Food: Depends on the day and the chef. Can be very good or very poor. But even when it is good all the other bad elements of this venue detract so much from the good food as to make it not worth it.
Service: Staff don't last long there. Consequently they don't know much, although can be friendly and trying hard. Staff is also sprinkled with international students who cannot speak enough English to converse with patrons. Routinely understaffed, expect delays.
The cashier is horrible and insults customers for sport. Staff will not refund your money or comp you anything no matter how badly you have been treated. There is always another tourist to take your place.
Value: Awful. Watch out for the side dishes - up to $12 for some mashed potato! Cakes was way overpriced. Watch out for the water issue. They try to upsell Fiji water so will not bring jugs of water to the table and will reluctantly give you a glass of tap water (no ice, have to pay for that) to try to force you onto the expensive Fiji water.
