Good food. Enjoyed our meal. Atmosphere along Hardware is fantastic. Service was pleasant. Average price for area, but overall a bit pricey.

Hardware Lane on a pleasant evening is often hard to beat. Max is one of the larger places there sprawling out along the laneway with eager waiters ready to pounce on you and entice you to stay and dine. As the sun sets everything under the awning has a gentle yellow glow to it.

I can't believe a restaurant like this is still open, especially in melbourne cbd. My friend's steak was burnt so they redid it and it came out raw. Another friend had glass in her meal! When the waiter came to take our plates he shoved his face into ours aggressively and asked how the food was... he definitely stepped over the personal space. To top it off, the food was so average and completely overpriced for its quality. I could have made a better paella.

What a great place to dine. I was lucky to come across this restaurant on my first night in Melbourne, when I was down for the Australian Open. My family and I dined there five times during our stay and were impressed by the consistent level of service and high quality of food. Atmosphere is also great and what a bustling place it is. Can't wait to return to Mebourne and visit Max again.

Glass in food. Avoid. Was really upsetting to find a 1cmx1cm shard of glass in my food. They obviously said I did not have to pay for the dish, but had the gall to charge us for the other meal. I was on a business trip with my wife and daughter and I shudder to think of what could have happened if any one of us had swallowed the glass. Take your business elsewhere for your healths sake.

Will not be going back there. Awful service. Waited over 50minutes, food was cold, tough. Has ruined my experience of "hardware lane".

Won't be going back here - had a group of girls for dinner there last night and watched everyone around us get served first, even those who arrived after us - nearly an hour after we ordered we finally got served only after we threatened to leave if our meals didn't come out soon. Service was rude and although the owner saw us complaining to the waiter he walked straight past us as if he knew nothing of our frustration. Refused any kind of compensation for having waited so long and told us that we were being unreasonable. The pecking duck risotto had chirizo sausage in it and the sticky date was cold and unedible even though it had taken 50 minutes to bring out and had clearly been cut from a larger slab on only needed re-heating! Poor service - will be telling everyone I know to go anywhere else in hardware lane but max, there are so many other places that offer much better service and quality meal, this is Melbourne after all - there are many other places to go!

Awful experience last night. Encouraged to choose to dine here due to friendly female on street explaining menu. Downhill from there, insufficient outdoor heating, inattentive wait staff, missing or luke warm food, beverage order ignored, poor quality, for example steamed mixed vegetables was 98% carrots, with minuscule amount of butternut squash and green beans, drowned in garlic butter.

Apology given by staff member at till but no offer to reduce bill or make any tangible amends. Will never go back and will let people know to avoid at all cost.

Great place for dinner, busy and lively which is what we wanted for a Friday night. The food and service were fantastic. I went back 6 months later for dinner whilst on a business trip and the waiter remembered me...pretty impressed by that!
