My review is based on the cake section of Brunetti only. My visits to Brunetti have been infrequent as it's a little out of my way to go there, but the last few times I've been I've enjoyed their cakes, which are generally quite moist and flavourful. However, during a recent visit, when I decide to try something else, I was thoroughly disappointed. We went there in the evening, extremely busy as usual and it took us almost 5 minutes to find some place to sit.
Then we ordered a few tarts and cheesecakes to try. The Nutella low fat cheesecake was horrible, I wasn't expecting a lot of taste because it was low fat, but it was way below my expectations. There was absolutely no taste to speak of, and if you feed me blindfolded, I would not be able to tell you I am eating cheesecake because even the texture was not cheesecake-like, and where is the Nutella?!?!
The tarts were equally disappointing, and with the tart shell being as hard as rock, it had to be penetrated with two forks as they didn't provide knives and I was NOT in the mood to fight through a mass of people to ask for a knife. The filling was bland and the only tasty part was the candied lemon on top of the tart. After this visit, I am not so sure I will be back any time soon (or at all); plenty of other great eats in Melbourne.
With its reputation, I expected great things from this place, but I found the food putrid (horrible cakes, disgusting coffee) especially for how much they charge. You can find better cakes at any other restaurants/coffee shops on Lygon street. No one can argue the cakes look good, they're world class in presentation but I definitely would not be recommending anyone buying cakes from there.
Firstly let me say that I would not recommend the cafe section for lunch as the meals are very ordinary (especially those in the bay-maire). However, it is worth visiting the cake shop / sweet section as they do have a very good selection of Italian cakes. Unfortunately, the coffee is terrible, which is strange as they have full-time baristas.
They really should be ashamed of themselves for serving such awful coffee, no crema and a horrid sour/burnt aftertaste (I drink espressos). Order a hot chocolate instead.
My review is based on the restaurant adjoining brunetti's - for those that have been know its sort of split into three, a cafe on one side, a cake shop with a couple tables in the middle, then to the far left is the formal restaurant.
Brunetti's restaurant was nothing short of a well done, properly European meal. The waiter was just great, was very accommodating to my family's demands and funny orders. The wine suggestion was great, the specials were top notch italian fare, and with the 100's of delectable sweets in the room adjacent how can you go wrong.
I went there today and bought some food to spoil my family with a picnic. After asking the waitress on numerous times to ensure the food would be reheated to very hot, and to throw in plastic knifes and forks and the panini to be cut in quaters. We arrived at our picnic spot in Carton less than 2 minutes away and the meals were practically stoned cold, the panini was cold and still whole and there were no knives to cut it. If that didn't give me indigestion the rude service and the $50.00 bill for a piece of lasagna, a crepe, a panini a 3 small cakes certainly did.
Life is really is "a cold lasagna'' at Brunetti, needless to say I have given up on that place, even if it has nice cakes.
If you have a sweet tooth, you'll be in heaven. Everything else though is just a money spinner, and good luck to them. You expect the lack of service and average meals, however, I was really disappointed with the coffee. Not up to par for an Italian icon. Anyway, the cannolli and nougat ease the pain quite considerably enough that I'd endure the rat race and frantic pace again for a small indulgence of the sweet kind..
It is a great place to satisfy your sweet tooth but expect minimal service and having to rub shoulders with other dinners. Too busy and very difficult to get a table if you go during the evenings or all days in the weekends. Poor quality coffee but the standards for the cakes and pastries are worth it.
Great cakes and biscuits, and some tasty pastry/lunch fare but expect high prices, zero service, appalling decor and huge crowds. The coffee at Brunetti is a more miss than hit production. Better places to spend your money abound.
Might be good but you'd never know - it's way too busy! Staff just concentrate on getting you in and out. There's no time to savour the tastes. Nervous breakdown material.
