Four of us went to Blackburn Hotel this evening for dinner. My friend's hubby ordered a chicken pizza, it was huge and chunks of chicken and smothered in BBQ sauce, the base was not cooked properly it was doughy like a bread roll.
My friend and I had senior meal of grilled fish and chips and salad. When the meal was delivered we both shuddered as the fish was one slice of pure white fish it looked and tasted like it had been poached, definitely not grilled it had no colour at all and no taste. There were only a few chips and the salad was minimal. My husband had a senior meal, fried fish and it consisted of 1 medium piece of fish a few chips and again minimal salad.
We three chose desserts with our senior meal and two of us had a yummy slice of chocolate cake my hubby received a small parfait glass of tinned fruit salad with a small dob of cream. When the waitress took the almost uneaten plate of pizza my friends hubby commented that it was just awful she apologized and took it away and when she came back she said we could all have a complimentary coffee. When the coffees arrived on was just luke warm, we apologized for complaining again but mentioned the coffee was not hot, the waitress was very apologetic and immediately replaced it.
The waitress staff were very friendly and helpful but we were very disappointed with our meal, senior meal and dessert cost $15.50 each and the pizza at $20 was we feel overpriced and just awful. We will not be going back there again.
Have yet to have a good meal at this hotel/pub, overprized and a menu that looks good in print but does not live up too. I had the traditional chicken parma that came out resting on a stack of chips with some what was meant to be side salad consisting of bitter tasting fancy lettuce and sliced cabbage. Why we can't go back to traditional iceberg lettuce, cucumber and fresh tomato with a nice Italian/French dressing is beyond me.
My partner had the roast of the day which was lamb served with seasonal vegetables, the lamb was on the warm side smothered in what seemed like gravox gravy and the vegetables seemed mass produced frozen crying out for some seasoning or at least a pinch of salt. Food cost is too excessive for the quality and the atmosphere is food court like and very noisy.
I attended the Blackburn Hotel with my family last night (wife 2 young children and a baby in a pusher). We hadn't been there for a few years as our previous meal experience was disappointing. Upon arrival we were promptly greeted at the door, but then looked upon as an inconvenience as we did not have a booking. We were seated at table 12 in front of the kitchen, a table that was described by the waitress as being "down the back" as if it were a second class table.
Fortunately, the serviettes weren't linen as the first job was to put a serviette under a wobbly table leg. Menus arrived that presented and read well. The selection of dishes and the prices were not what we were expecting for a suburban pub with a noisy stark bistro. Perhaps, the chef has ambitions of working in a 5 star restaurant? Enough said about the menu not matching the environment.
The hype in the menu and on the posters about how special your steaks are certainly built our expectations. We accepted that we were going to pay $30+ for a main course which would be sensational. We ordered our meals at 6.05 pm. 2 kids burgers, a lamb shank and a rump medium rare with peppercorn sauce. I would have preferred to have had hollandaise sauce but was very surprised and disappointed to find that it wasn't made fresh. Egg yolk, a vinegar reduction and clarified butter plus a 2nd year apprentices time isn't too much to ask at $32 a serve is it?
The kids meals arrived at 6.30 pm. They were well presented if for an adults bar snack, although a little too 'fancy' for a kids meal. The use of a bland frozen pattie showed lazyness on the part of the kitchen.
Our main courses arrived at 6.50 pm. I was wondering why one of the first orders into the kitchen took 45 minutes when it was for a precooked shank and a 15 minute steak? One bite and I had my answer. A well done steak. I asked the waitress to take it back. She was very apologetic as was the waitress who brought the second meal. A replacement meal arrived for me a short while later.
The steak was cooked correctly, but the presentation was poor, the sauce obviously made from a powdered gravy mix and the vegetables were over cooked and not seasoned. Having to eat my meal with my family having already eaten and ready to go home didn't help.
We have written to the manager twice but did not get a response. In conclusion our experience last night was not an enjoyable one, not value for money and one that we would advise others to avoid.
One of the best local hotels in the eastern suburbs. The food was great, and the service was outstanding. All staff had a positive attitude to work and were willing to accommodate customers with there needs. The venue was well set up with superb car parking, great pokies venue, and the rest of the hotel was a great change to the other pubs around the area.
Better than the average pub meal, don't like the pokies & it can get quite noisy when full. Easy parking, good pub service. Good place to go if you are looking for a decent pub meal & don't expect too much from the ambience.
Very dissapointing. Waited 1 hour for a simple steak and then made to feel bad because I asked for my money back. Was talked into waiting another 10 mnutes for the meal after complaining and in retrospect, I should have gotten my money back as the meal (porterhouse with pepper sauce) was bland and relatively tasteless. Not a pleasant dining experience and I won't be back.
Great meals not the normal pub menu though which was a nice change, helpful staff but been near the pokies was not my favourite part. Good car park and a ok selection of beer, good food, good service but just plain inside.
