I must've had the place on a good night because I'd definitely recommend the place to people. My friend and I started off with the scallops entree, which featured some quite small scallops that had a peculiar flavor, but the black pudding tempura was an incredibly inspired and great tasting addition.
My main was the Bouillabaisse, which generally has a much more watery base than this one had, but that was not a major complaint. Fish was cooked perfectly, a nice assortment and quantity of prawns and mussels, though the clams were bleh.
Dessert was a brownie topped with pistachio ice cream and cherries/cherry sauce. Absolutely divine, the best part of the meal. I'd go back there again for that dish alone.
Ambience is good, hard to beat the location on southbank. Service was good if a bit on the slow side, but to be fair it is a French restaurant, so it's to be expected. Prices were a bit dear, but again, you're paying for location, not necessarily the food or service. A solid restaurant, will be back again at some point.
Nice location along the river, however, this is where it ends for Bistro Vite. Very disappointing food, and hands down the worst restaurant I have been to in Melbourne. The service was friendly enough, however, this could not make up for the leather shoe disguised as a 'wagyu' steak. The duck main was so -so, however, the accompanying coffee sauce was too sweet. Entrees of a 'charcuterie' plate was presented as three different pates/terrines, one of which was entirely inedible. The tasting spoons were insipid or just downright wrong. Definitely not a restaurant worth visiting.
Interesting menu at a reasonable price. Great location and pleasant ambience. Slightly disappointed that they overcooked the steak and there were just far too many chips.
On the 28th of August 2007, our small company of friends decided to go to Bistro Vite. The ravioli with the salmon was bland, tasteless and unappealing. The lack of creativeness within the kitchen was seen with each of the plates that were coming out. The gnocchi was ridiculous, it was over cooked, making it hard to chew when placed in the mouth and while it was burnt and with too much oil, it was still able to lack taste and it seemed as though I could cook it better.
The ambience within the venue was mediocre. The linguini with calamari, rockets and cherry tomatoes was the food special...not so. It was the most visual appealing but tasted terrible. We were thinking of getting desserts but hey...why spent the money in bad food. At the end we were very disappointed in it all. It appeared to be a great atmosphere but it was deceiving. It left a bad after taste in our mouth...even worse in our wallets.
