A good, reliable French experience. Warm, cosy, dark. Food is standard bistro fare, in good proportions and well presented. The only drawback was the staff, a bit distracted on the night we were there. The wine list is a bit pricey, but covers a lot of ground (and it's great to see a few half bottles on offer). The location's great, Melbourne CBD close to most of the theatres.

This place isn’t hip. It isn’t at the cutting edge. But if you like real food done by masters, this is a great place to eat, even in a city of great places. The style is French bistro with the occasional veer into other locations. The room itself is moody with dark wood panelling but the food shines, brilliantly realised and full of flavour. The terrine of lamb in a pinot gris aspic was subtle and bold at the same time and looked almost surgical in its perfection.

The twice cooked duck on a lentil salad was a mix of rich meat and a chopped leaf and lentil salad that almost sparkled in the mouth. And the bouillabaisse was just as delicious as all the other reviewers here have said. As soon as it arrived you could see it was special. Even the pomme frites were a flawless example of the art of chip making. Bistro d’Orsay isn’t the cheapest but it is total value for money. Possible downside, in French style, the tables are small and you might sit very close to the people beside you.

Great location, very nice ambience, as tsj1979 suggests a little bit of a Paris, right down to the grumpy/rude waiters! My wife had the bouillabaisse, which was the highlight in particular the rouille topped crouton.

Considering this was our fifth choice (due to comedy festival everywhere was booked out when we were making reservations) it was a great surprise. Now the waiter was very efficient in making sure our water was always filled and our table was immaculate but besides that he was a tad on the rude side.

Due to timing, to get to our show, we skipped entree and jumped straight into the mains. I was trying something new and lets just say the oxtail is now a new favourite, it was cooked perfectly with the meat just melting.

The other two guests had the duck which was apparently delicious and the special which was gnocchi in a beef ragout (now we finally know what it is) which I tried and was highly impressed. We ordered sides (french fries not worth it and beans simple but beautiful and fresh) but even though the meals looked small (and very well presented) they were plenty.

The place has a great style to it with the ceiling painting, dark timber and crammed tables all adding a touch of 'Paris' to our dining experience. A pleasant experience!

With very low banquettes my wife's chest was level with the table, no cushions available so they moved the two of us to a standard table. This was done with a friendly touch. The food was very good, especially the bouillabaisse. With large portions two entree sized meals were more than adequate accompanied by a nice flinty Sancerre.

Beautiful food - they squeeze as many people in as possible so it can seem a bit squishy hence the mediocre score on ambience but the food and service more than make up for it. Many customers go for a pre-show dinner so if you let the staff know when your show starts they will make sure that your meal arrives in plenty of time. Great restaurant - Will be back.

The food is really impressive. You must try the bouillabaisse. One of the best I have ever had, and I have had quite a few. When we walked in, the waiters gave us the holier-than-thou response. One of them overheard my partner say "what is wrong with them? So grumpy" and immediately picked up on their act. A good find! Will definitely come back when I am in Melbourne.
