Basque Tapas and Wine opened is committed to running a restaurant that reflects the authenticity of the Basque region. Basque Country is a small ethnic enclave located in the heart of the Pyrenees Mountains, which divide Spain and France from one another. Inspired by French nouvelle cuisine, the Basque country is nowadays regarded as Spainâ?®s uncontested gourmet stronghold.
The only thing that matter to the Basques is absolute freshness, abundance of fresh seafood and pure flavours of the very best basic ingredients. We at Basque Tapas and Wine, pride ourselves in this unique dining experience. The Spanish reputation for having a good time, and a passion for their food comes alive at Basque Tapas and Wine, Melbourne's premier tapas restaurant and wine bar, in Chapel Street Windsor.

Meatballs dish arrived cold and were sent back this took 20 minutes to return to table. Croquettes were almost cold which was disappointing. Obviously tapas here is reheated. Sangria was excellent! (Thank god I needed it). Serving sizes are small eg ordered croquetted and got just two and you get 3 meatballs so when you share 1.5 meatballs @ $14 a serve. This is just plain frustrating.
Would not go back for the price you pay here.

We went to the restaurant as part of a table of 10. I had dined there a few years ago and I was hoping things had gotten better. Unfortunately, it was the same story. Bad service and bland awful food. Our table wasn't ready when we arrived and they didn't serve any type of light beer for our drivers on the table. The tapas was awful.
Meatballs were rubbery, potatoes tasted days old and the serves were very small. Paella was awfully gluggy and seafood was clearly frozen and tasteless. Could barely even tell there was any saffron in the rice. Will avoid ever coming here at all costs. Not worth handing over any money for.

I went there last night 27/8/11 and my friend and I ordered 6 tapas plates and two glasses of white sparkling wine sangria that the waiter recommended to us. Our drinks arrived, however, they served us the normal red wine sangria and not the one we ordered and only 5 tapas plates came out. We assumed the other would be out shortly so we started eating, half an hour later we had finished our meal and our last dish still had yet to come. We went inside to speak to the waiter and advised him of the wrong drink and our missing last tapas plate.
Overall just an unenjoyable experience, wrongs drinks and incomplete meal and no real apology or a goodwill gesture for the poor service. We paid our full $80 bill but will definitely not be back again or recommend it. The food wasn't that great anyway, just very bland and the service was pitiful, barely English speaking waiters who gave us no attention nor cared how bad they mucked up our meal.

We went on a Saturday night when the Spanish band was playing. They do modern songs with a Spanish vibe to it, really fun. The chef came out and danced with customers, very authentic! The food was great and the staff were very attentive. Definitely get the spanish doughnuts!

Recently my partner and I had dinner at this place for valentines day. I can't eat seafood and they had a set menu for the night. They were able to cater for me and my partner very well, the food was great and the service was excellent. The chef was aware of my dietary needs and came out to make sure we enjoyed our meal - he was fantastic. Overall, the portions weren't huge but the tastes and venue was very romantic. Excellent work guys, keep it up.

A Spanish fiesta on Friday night. A party of 8 of us decided to try Basque as we had heard good things about it and wanted to try a traditional Spanish restaurant not the “Fast food” kind. We were welcomed by the staff that were warm and friendly making us all feel we were part of their big family. We decided to order the degustation as this way we can try a selection of their best dishes.
The food was absolutely amazing and I can honestly say that it was the best Spanish food I have tried in Melbourne and Sydney. The degustation was great value and the Spanish wines were perfectly matched by the staff who obversely have had extensive wine training.
The live Spanish band that kicked off around 9 pm bought the whole restaurant to another level with staff getting involved with the flamenco clapping and singing. All I have to say is we all had one of the best nights out and will remember it for years to come.

Do Not Go. Service was arrogant, food was well below average, salty, cold and meat tasted like it was days old. Waited 35 minutes for the paella, and when it came, was tasteless and dry. Eight tapas, one paella and a bottle of wine came to $121.
Response from Management:
We are sorry you had such a bad experience but just to clear one thing up. On the menu it states that it is a 30 minute wait for the paella because it is cooked fresh and from scratch. All paella's take this long or longer unless you have pre-cooked rice which is not the traditional Spanish way.

Sure, it was the evening of Boxing Day, but still I expected more that tomato sauce on fried potatoes (seriously!), rubbery eggplant that was tasteless and cold (the dish was meant to be hot), "sorry we have run out of chorizo", "sorry we have run out of prawns", 2 floor staff frantically trying to serve a busy restaurant, the paella that never came, and then a $140 bill for three of us. Ridiculous. Awful. Never again.

I would never go back to this place again! the food is salty, lacks flavor the paella is a rip off! don't get the chicken! It was full of bones, no meat or veggies, they seemed like it was days old! not worth $40 dollars. We complained about the meal and didn't have to pay, were told to come back when the "better" kitchen staff was on! OMG! as if we would come back!

Food was not 'authentic' Spanish cuisine, as the 'Seafood Paella' lacked taste and looked more like a risotto! Ambience was a 'cosy' and 'rustic' Spanish Tapas bar setting. Service was 'friendly' and 'prompt.' Value for money, not quite!
To savour 'authentic' and 'fine' Spanish cuisine, patrons are better off visiting the restaurant located along Bourke St in Melbourne. Ole!
