We had the $20 lunch special on a week day in winter. We both had the shepherd's pie which was nicely presented and enjoyable. Other offerings included several pasta dishes, fish and chips (looked good at the next table) and a pizza. The included glass of red was fine but coffee was extra (understandable). The room is pleasant enough and service was friendly. We didn't ask for the main menu, so can't comment on the value or otherwise there.

Edit January 2012 - the lunch special is now $25 but it's still enjoyable. However, it does seem that the menu hasn't changed since the above review in June 2010. Perhaps, the regulars like it that way!

I have to agree with Greg Graham 11 April. I had the $30 Ploughman's Grazing Plate and really, it was no better in quality or quantity than what a pub would charge $15-$18 for. Other than the aged cheddar which tasted more like goats cheese, which I hate, nothing was outright bad but it was all just ordinary.

As was the lemon tart with cream for dessert and the tasteless hot chocolate I had with it. I hesitate to write a review about a place based on only a one visit (what if you just chose the restaurants weaker dishes?) but when prices get beyond a certain point I think its reasonable to expect that everything will be good.

What you pay for here is a very comfortable banquette, pretty good service, and a Malvern locale.

We have had consistently good experiences dining at Barca. The service is impeccable, friendly and helpful, and very accommodating of our child, although the restaurant is clearly more geared to grown-up dining. Sensational bread hot out of the oven to start, don't accept the generous offer of seconds though because there is a lot to experience on the menu.

We shared the tapas platter and were most impressed with the selection and generosity of the servings. Mains are well executed and the affogato was a great finish to the meal. I am keen to try to lunch special which is a bargain. Highy recommended.
