Does anyone else think there are lots of tired old Chinese reataurants in Chinatown? Our experience at Bamboo House was probably repeated in 7 or 8 other establishments in Chinatown that very day. Drab, dated interior, waiters who have been in the job 10 years too long, formula food and a feeling that it's all not quite 2008.
Food was just passable. A nice crumbed chilli squid to start, a pretty good, if standard, Peking Duck and good fried rice. On the downside a Szechuan Beef that lacked any sort of punch and was full of very tough meat, steamed fish drowned in something called lemon sauce that had the consistency of custard and prawns in the same old oyster sauce glug.
I know there is great stuff happening in Chinese cuisine but not here and not at these prices.
On a recommendation we visited Bamboo House last weekend on a visit to Melbourne from Sydney. We subscribe to the theory that there is no reason you can't eat Chinese food every day (after all the Chinese do!) so we are pretty hard makers with this cuisine. The Tea-Smoked Duck was awesome! First rate duck smoked to perfection sitting atop plump flour dumplings. So much more interesting than duck pancakes.
Our other course was a special request of soft egg with prawns. The other soft egg or omelette dishes on the menu are egg white dishes which we look forward to trying but are glad we insisted on the special request. It was delightful. Ambience is busy (not bustling) and décor ok. Service was attentive and management friendly. The wine list is very reasonably priced. All-in-all a great Chinese Restaurant.
Good quality Chinese food is served here, produce is fresh and they are happy to adapt banquet menu to suit your tastes. Service is very good and great value too! Compare well to some of the more expensive Chinese options available.
