The yum cha dishes tend to be deep-fried varieties with too much sugar in them. Tea are too weak to my own liking as the original flavour of tea leaves are masked by the overpowering scent of various herbs or flowers.
Service is mediocre with many waiters appearing bored and lethargic (obviously they were hired as part time staff). The decoration of the venue does not match the contents and service offered by the restaurant. It feels like I am paying the decoration and interior design of the place rather than to dine in the restaurant.
The food at this establishment is quite good and while being very non-threatening for those not accustomed to yum cha, it holds enough to please the seasoned yum cha veteran. The selection of tea is also very wide and welcome.
Set in a converted and tastefully decorated older storefront, it is noticably quiter than most yum cha venues, particularly those in Chinatown, but having the tea store in the front of the venue can take away from the intimacy of the venue.
The staff are generally well mannered and attentive although going during their meal times can lead to a poorer quality of service and like most yum cha places, the language barriers can sometimes prove rather frustrating.
While the dishes are around $7 each, they are very filling and a large meal can be had for $30 per person, which given the quality of the food, service and ambience, while not overwhelmingly cheap, is still decent value for money.
We came in the late afternoon probably between 'service times" as the kitchen staff were all sitting at a long table towards the back of the restaurant eating dinner. In any case, it they weren't prepared for customers they should not offer service at this time.
Whilst there were only a few tables in the restaurant, the service was very average. When our selection of yum-cha arrived, we had to ask for condiments (ie. chilli sauce, soy etc) and it appeared that no one really bothered with our table. I would have preferred to have been told to return when they were ready for service rather than feel like we were a hindrance whilst the staff were having their meal break.
Great place to eat, very friendly staff, prompt service and meals came out very quick. If you're after something quick, light and not expensive then this is highly recommended.
My favourite yum cha place so far...While it's not completely traditional, the food is of a very high quality and the best thing is the ability to drink great tea as an accompaniment. A wide variety of teas to choose from - my favourite is Jasmine Pearl.
There is a large selection of more western style dishes - mainly things like fried wonton and spring rolls but some great steamed dishes as well - must try the mushroom shiu mai and the scallop dumpling. Food is made with care (not often you can say that in a Chinese restaurant and I've been to a few as I am Chinese!) and of good quality.
The service is efficient and friendly. On the weekends I would recommend going early or making a booking.
