The Aviary’s DJ’s play an eclectic mix of contemporary, retro beats and old grooves 9pm-1am every Friday and Saturday.

‘Sunday Soul Sessions’ are hosted by PBS crew Vince Peach and G7 spinning vinyl from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. Vintage blues, soul, funk and original R&B. Every Sunday 4pm to 8pm.

Overview of The Aviary

The Aviary is a bar and eating house located in the heart of Little Saigon. A welcome addition to Victoria Street it’s a space for friends to get together around great food, seasonal cocktails and a concise yet thoroughly interesting wine list showcasing both old world and new world wines. A great selection of spirits is on offer with special attention given to a variety of gin and vodka.

Executive Chef Stephane Rio offers a contemporary Australian menu with French and Asian influences. Hailing from Brittany, France, Stephane’s roots are rustic dishes with a passion for what he calls “honest food”…good produce put together simply and with flair. Midweek and Sunday dining is a relaxed affair with Fridays and Saturdays kicking up a livelier pace.

The Aviary is just as busy as The Vic on a Friday night but has a rather different vibe to it. Instead of sitting out the front of The Vic, smoking or hitting the dancefloor, at The Aviary you are simply chatting and enjoying the company of your friends.

Not your average bar or pub food. Everydish came out looking like those you would get at a fine dining restaurant, very refine and intricately presented. Unfortunate the flavors were a let down. Very bland and the steak had not much flavor. The specials which was chicken breast meat was dry and bland. Only the fish dish was nice with the tomato citrus sauce. The drinks list was good and we liked the Kirin beer on tap.

Myself and 4 friends had dinner at The Aviary saturday night. Share plates were very tasty and my steak was fantastic. Then kicked back and listened to some old school funk and soul tunes whist trying nearly all the cocktails. I didn't drive home(i think).

I had my birthday at the Aviary last saturday, 8 of us had dinner which was fantastic and the food very well priced, then about 10 other friends joined us for a drink upstairs in the lounge bar.

We live in the area and can't believe we didn't know about this place earlier. 6 of us rocked up early for a few beers but decided to stay for dinner and we enjoyed the best meal and service we've had in ages. The waiter was casual but spot on and we were glad we went with his suggestion of share plates. We let him order for us and he was spot on. Especially loved the tempura oysters served in spoons and the tasting plate of pork rillettes. Great beer garden too. Thanks guys, now we have a new local.

Met friends there for a Sunday lunch, I loved the place. The venue has a cosy feel, the waitress was friendly and attentive and oh so funky! What really floored me was the quality of the food, particularly given that it was $5 for tasting plates (Sunday special), we just ordered 1 of everything on the menu at that price, which was easily enough for the 4 of us (though one person was a bit fussy and didn't eat much), we didn't need another plate of arancini but it was so delicious we had to! So about $80 for 4 of us including a couple of drinks each. Top value.

Our group of 5 went here for dinner last week. This is apparently a new restaurant, and they obviously have some teething problems.

Service was mostly absent, and naive slash novice. Unfortunately, our mains order took an hour to arrive (in a half full restaurant), and when questioned the waitress told us the kitchen was busy supplying $3 pizza's to the pub next door. This was not well received as we were paying $12 for the same pizza with an hour wait! The main course salads were delish but very small, and the mushroom gnocchi was very rich, swimming in a puddle of cream.

My nicoise was served without the quail eggs, but this was quickly rectified. On the bright side, the chicken parma was gi-normous and delicious, and is available on Thursdays (I think) for $16 with a glass of vino. The $12 Tuesday steak was excellent value, and cooked perfectly to order. A lack of service made us ditch our plans to carry on with coffee and dessert, we decided to go elsewhere.

I think this place has good potential, as it is cosy, comfortable, and reasonably priced, but the service leaves a lot to be desired. Will return only for $3 pizza's next door, and the Thursday night parma.
